Have bought some fleece to make curtains to hang right against the windows in both bedrooms, behind the normal curtains. Will just hem them both ends and thread them onto a taut length of curtain wire and fix onto small hooks in the wall, on either side of the windows.

I got colours that will match the existing curtains so that they won't look too strange.

There is a definate nip in the air today and black clouds up above.

I'm going to try and improve on fleeces at the window this winter by making window quilts:

Very popular in Canada, says my new Canadian neighbour, the extra layers should work even better.
I'm also going to try one with the £1 foil survival blankets in them, should reflect more heat back into the room but may tear easily as I make it, but as I have one feel the need to try it.
Could also use old thin duvets too.

  • We do this too, but I make sure the doors are kept well dusted. I think there is nothing better than seeing a line full of washing billowing in the wind. I'm easily pleased:rotfl:
    I completely agree with you!

I used to love to see a row of sparkling white Terry towelling nappies hanging on the line when my sons were small.

I do have a tumble dryer but I have used it only once in the last 3 years. I get a strange sense of satisfaction in beating the utility companies by not using gas and electric.
  • Annie, what a brilliant link to that homesteading page. I have lost myself happily in it for a few minutes... and now have plans to make lots of window quilts!! :)

Annie, I'm sure my Norwegian penpals had these quilts too, many years ago. (Maybe now they all have super insulated triple glazed houses though). I'm thick - I cant understand how to start doing them. Would you maybe post a step by step rough guide ? I have very cold bedrooms in winter and no double glazing. But those bloody squares would drive me mad very fast - I need plain ones !! LOL

I'm going to start mine next week, no intention making it out of little squares, not enough patience, but have found many ways to make them online so will take pictures as I go and post here.

First ones going in DD's bedroom, she has the corner bedroom nasty north facing above 2 unheated hallways (flat below) so always cold and single glazed casement windows.

. Also this is scotland..for me if I'm working the traction things (with nothing practically being gritted due to cutbacks pavements wise) are a MUST....

We live in Scotland too and our road was a sheet of ice last year. We bought ice cleats from ebay, the rubber kind that stretch over your shoes, all the online UK shops were sold out so we ended up buying from the USA and by the time they got here (about a week) the ice was gone, so might be a good idea to buy them now.

We bought from a seller called atanacc, but there are plenty of others out there selling the same product. With postage they came to just over £12.50.

Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.
