muffinman7 I only do the quick wash 1/2 hour it takes from beginning to end, I too find whites do need a hotter wash, one other thing I do is when they have finished, I move them around in the drum and put them on another spin and they definitely come out a little drier.

I have my radiator racks on the radiators all the time and just leave smalls on there to dry (I do take them off if I have visitors :o) good job I live on my own really :rotfl:

I do have a window open if only on vent summer and winter in each room especially when the washing is hanging around and have not in the 3 years I have been here, had any problem with mould or mustiness

Cavity walls are now insulated, with a grant, although I suspect those might dry up in the current financial clmate. We actually had it done towards the end of last winter, and could feel the difference the same evening.

    Hi all,
This thread is so big am finding it a bit off putting, would anyone object to a Prepare for Winter 2010 thread being started?

    Me too:o

Anyway - I seem to remember a little while ago someone mentioned sewing a fleece into their curtains to help with the drafts... how do you do this? I am completely hopeless at sewing so could you talk me through it?

I tacked a heading tape onto my fleece and just put hooks into the tape and fastened these to spare sections of the tape on the curtains before putting the curtains back up. Only took a few mins from start to finish.

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p

Hi Sunny - I have no idea what you mean! I wasn't kidding when I said I was hopeless! Could you start with what heading tape is and where I'd get it? And did you sew it on by hand?

    Thanks

I also saw something in the telegraph about the much higher food bills this coming winter, caused by the long dry summer. I wasn`t going to stock up much this summer but have changed my mind as my stock was incredibly useful last year. One of our best but late buys was a couple of pairs of gripper things to put over the soles of shoes. We managed to walk to get medicines and food in for elderly neighbours

We have bought our total winter fuel supply for the winter. Wood pellets for our stove, which will heat water and small radiators if they are switched on. We have been in our new house for just a couple of months but it was designed with energy economy in mind. The wood cost under £300 and the pelllets go into a hopper in the stove

Last winter I had too many tins of corned beef and not enough tins of beans that go easily into nourishing soups and the likes. I think I`ll be doing a food audit before I start buying

If anyone can get to an M & S outlet shop I have just bought some thermal vests for £2.50 each instead of £6 I paid last year. Also got a 3 in one proper coat for £20 from Mountain Warehouse. Everyone else was buying pretty little t shirts and tops!!
