  • Thanks. That winter duvet looks fab. For some reason I have a bit of a thing about bedding, duvets, pillows, throws etc. I dont actually need a anymore bedding, but I just love to look at it. I am so sad! :)

Just found this thread. I have never actually prepared for winter before and really struggled last year. I am going to try and read through and pick up some ideas :)

Today I am clearing out a kitchen cupboard (a challenge in a small kitchen!) and going to try and pick some ideas for stocking it. I am starting with UHT milk.

I was planning on stocking up a bit this winter anyway, having been caught out last year when a combination of snow/ice and flu meant that I couldn't get out for about three weeks. The main things I want to get in stock are cat litter and cat food, as I ran out of both: I ended up feeding the cat on organic stewing steak and free range chicken last year (he was a happy cat ;)).

I must also get myself a decent torch in case of power cuts, although that's not specifically a winter thing - we've had a couple of power cuts recently and I've found that my flat is very dark without electric lighting (I know that sounds silly - what I mean is there's very little ambient light).
Back after a very long break!

When I buy from Lidl there is usually at least 4 months if not more on them so obviously whoever collected your order in store just took from the front of the goods. That is one of the reasons I don't shop on line anymore

We managed quite well last winter aside from being a bit cold and we have loads of fleecy blankets and woolies so I hope we'll be fine. I will make sure I get some extra UHT milk and that I have bread flour in though because whilst the shop did have things the walk up the icy hill and carrying it home in a backpack was not the most enjoyable of experiences!

My big to do before it gets cold is getting our landlord to fix the radiators that don't work in our house, there's one in the living room, one in the spare room, the one in the bathroom and the one in the office which are all faulty or just don't heat up at all. We survived last winter but I think our living room will be a lot cosier if the big radiator is working when we are turning the heating on.

I have always kept a good store cupboard and I have a list I keep pinned on the insde of the door, so I know whats in there. When I take something out I add it to my shopping list (which I print out) the new stock goes to the back. I always have at least 4 x 1l cartons of milk, bread flour, salt, beans tomato's etc in and I make sure that we have a months supply of meat in the freezer. The only thing thats difficult to store is eggs, but each time I go shopping I buy a carton of 10 from Aldi....eggs can be so useful along with cheese if you are caught short by the weather.

We live on a farm so potato's are available, we have half a sack in the shed now, by the end of the summer we should have 2 sackfuls. Just the two of us and me trying to cut down on carbs a sack lasts us quite a time. One thing I will not do without are my roasties on Sunday.....ok the rest of the week....Sunday roast is sacrosanct.

I have an extra weight duvet and also put a quilt on the bed for when its very cold. I put hot water bottles in the bed about an hour before we retire, wrap our night clothes round then, when we get into bed we shove them to the bottom to warm our feel. I do not heat rooms we do not use, so unless someone is staying the guest room door stays shut. We have just bought an eco fan for the top of our multifuel stove, interested to see what difference it makes to the cottage. I have just had the oil tank filled and we have a full log store plus a couple of bags of coal.

We are all electric, so I invested in a picnic gas stove and gas lamp, also keep plenty of candles in and an oil lamp with the wick trimmed. I can cook a casserole on top of the stove, just start it off on the gas ring and then transfer it to the stove where it simmers away for the day.

Thick socks and boots are de rigur, we also bought new jackets last year, wind and rain proof ski jackets from Matalan £28 each, and they are brilliant. We already have fleece ski hats and gloves. We both have light fleeces to wear in the house and also thermal underwear which came in very handy last winter, not the most glamerous, but at least I was warm.

Unless anything untoward happens we should be fine if the weather closes in.......

Read from page 3 to page 1 as it goes backwards but looking at the patterns and the weather enthusiasts it looks like winter is going to be worse than last year!
