Dgs woke up every couple of hours last night - and he smiles when I get upto him - better than being a misery I guess. So am a tad tired today but his nanna has taken him out for the day so Im trying to relax but my sock knitting is sooo tempting - ok Im addicted already. Not measured it against my foot yet but will soon. Having a day off from worrying. Just been and picked more baby carrots for the freezer, they are so cute.

Thinking about xmas now, its time isn't it, do you think everyone will be getting socks?

I'm not mad on sock knitting - but its the one thing that everybody seems to love, and everybody needs. So last year I knitted loads of them and now the husband & daughter wont wear shop bought ones. So be ready !

I think I am going to do, maybe too far in advance but if last winter was anything to go buy..... I have bought a bucket, 89p in Aldi this week and am going to fill it with grit from the grit bin at the end of the road. I have some very steep steps in my garden & if its snowy it'll be too late to try & get up them to get some grit! My boyfriend thinks im nuts but I dont care....he'll see! Also if leave it till winter maybe everyone will have the same idean & there will be none left!!

Fantastic idea, I'll do that too. We've got 4 steps down from our house, and last winter was horrendous.

I can't believe I've missed this thread for so long. I thought about it on Saturday when I saw someone with a narrowboat had stashed loads of logs on the side of the canal, buried in the undergrowth.

I've got 2 feather duvets going spare, one double ans one king, and not sure what to make with them.

Barneysmum, mind you can put duvets underneath as well as on top - they make a very cosy sandwich!

I have started with the preparations for winter, today I have removed the plug from my tumble dryer as the electricity bill for last winter upto April was £350 not including the gas. I have no idea at all how to wire a plug and if I ask OH to do it, he will put it on his to do list along with the other million things I have asked him to look at, it will never work again....very MSE.

I have cleared the gulley drain outside the garage this morning, it has been needing doing for years, the rain ran into the garage during the winter as the gulley was so full of grit, leaves etc.

I will take down the snuggle throw from the loft tomorrow and wash it ready for the cooler nights sitting watching the tv.

I have sorted my wardrobe out and discovered lots of boxes of unused Christmas cards and wrapping paper, so I'm sorted there, I even found a couple of small gifts that I had bought in the sale, so I have started the Christmas shopping.:D

I'm liking the idea of storing grit/sand from the sand box across the road, guess whos going to buy a bucket tomorrow....me, cause last year, one bit of ice and it had all gone and I couldn't buy salt in the local supermarket either, so I'm going to stock up on that too. I live on a slope, and my OH can't get the car out of the drive without sand/salt, I will sacrifice a wee bit of money in order for him to make it into the office. (he gets under my feet when hes here, and I can only look busy for so long:D).

Can someone tell me please, I have two cats, if I use salt on the drive and the path during the winter months and the cats lick it off, will this cause health problems? If so, what would you recommend to grit the drive (the grit box on the side of the road is often empty during the winter months as the estate is built on a slope, and everyone needs the grit to get off the estate because of the ice/snow etc).

I picked up some proper preserving kit in Lakeland over the weekend (we were walking around Belfast in that bucketing rain!!). And I also gathered a lot of my storecupboard supplies in Mr S (first trip since last July - I surprised myself with being able to stay away).

Then we drove to Cork yesterday to collect DD (from one end of the country to the other, return, in just 36 hours!!). Now I am hoping to make my jams this week, and then get stuck into all the sewing I have planned. I made good progress on the cardigan I am making for my niece on the drive home last night, so that should be finished in the next couple of weeks - so I will start on the one I have planned for DD then, followed by one for a nephew.
