I'm so glad some of you have liked my grit stashing idea! I shall tell my boyfriend cos he doesnt understand why I want to do it now! Just need to make sure I keep it in the house come winter so I dont have to get up the steps to the grit! Need a shovel too, a garden one would work ok to clear any snow we might have wouldnt it?0

It would help but a shovel is a waider one with curves upwards at the edges, your spade ould work but it wouldn't pick up as much as the shovel would.
I've just been having a net mooch and found these funky looking ones.....

I found the bottle of table salt I had been keeping at work for when I take leftovers in, and I'm going to take it home with me tomorrow night to keep stashed away in case of bad weather. Other than that, no further plans.
It's raining here today which has meant I'll probably need to buy a sturdier umbrella! Another thing for the list.

I'm going to have to stop reading this thread. Tightened belt until pips squeaking and what have you made me do?.... Ordered some cheap fleeces (good fleeces cheap) for me and grandkids today. And told DH to fetch some more coal in next few days.
Somehow when DH was wandering about the other day, someone gave him a tree. Well, a big bit of tree. He's got to go round with chainsaw and fetch it. Absolutely brilliant..... and after all I've said about him. I'm just wondering now what he's swapped for it.0 -

I know the more hardy among us will think I'm incredibly dumb, but the white stuff really caught us south coasters on the hop
If the frost stays till breakfast, it's a bad winter for us
so I don't think stock-piling salt & grit will be such a good idea down here [although, No1 managed to "procure" :shhh: some official 'local authority' grade stuff & the remnants are still sitting in our front porch ] Talk about being stuck between a rock & a hard place as No1 has a shift every third week that means 24 hr availability, so we obviously have to take that into consideration too
I'm pretty certain we had a bash with the cat litter theory but it wasn't quite the success that others had said--anyone else recall that experiment?
I was sssoooo close to ordering those monk-fleece things yesterday--y'no, the blankets with sleeves & collar that look like you should be in a monastery--for :santa2: prezzies. The Offspring were really quick to accept snuggling under the throws & I couldn't believe how well they took to the idea; think a certain bearded Glazgee comic sprung into my mind & put me off buying them yesterday :rotfl:
The bubble wrap has been left in situ on the bathroom windows & has helped keep them cool during this heat too, so as long as the sticky holds out we won't have to think about that. The door curtain is still up too & helps darken the hallway so Pup can neither bark at a butterfly 30 yards up the road OR decide it's time we should be downstairs tooLooks like I'm pretty much sorted apart from having a thorough tidy of the food stocks & getting in a goodly stash of toothpaste especially, before the dreaded vat increase kicks in
Here's hoping I can improve the odds on a very slim chance I might get my cooker before Jan too..perhaps it's just as well I didn't get those habits yesterday
*goes off to ponder on how convincing I can make the idea of a noo cooka as a lafflee krissie prezzie for the Offspring*

Ginny - did you oven roast the guineapig or just bake it in foil ?
BMF of COURSE you need to get those poor wee bairns a cooker for their xmas !!! they deserve good meals ! you cannot POSSIBLY feed them properly on that old thing !! God woman, what were you thinking of ? get it now !0 -
I recall getting a pair of guinia pigs when we lived on the island - the first thing the kids asked was "what do they taste like?" - they lost interest when I told them they were for pets............until my sister pointed out that when she lived in Cyprus they used to eat them on a stick :-)0

I can understand you wanting to get your new cooker before the VAT increase comes in, but I can't see that stocking up on toothpaste will save you much. I think people are making too much of the increase of 2.5 pence per £1; it will hardly be noticeable on small items. Save your money towards the cooker and make more expensive needs the priority before January.:rudolf: Always skip and eat your peas :rudolf:0
