Hi everyone, i cant beleive how organised you all are! It is freezing here atm. hailing right now. i had to put my heating on the other day, can only afford to run 1 radiator as it's electric storage heating and costs a fortune to run! it's not giving out much heat either, is well overdue a service, been here 4 years and the council have never once serviced it. I'm so jealous of all the lucky people who have a real fire or stove! i miss it so much! been waiting for word of a bigger house for so long! doubt we'd get one with a fire though. they've replaced most of them with either gas or electric heating. i'm going to start on a couple of draught exluders tonight. and i love the idea with the fleece blankets over the window! genius! will have to give that a try. Look forward to any more good ideas.

Why don't you phone your council and tell them there is not much heat coming from your radiators and also tell them that in the four years you have been in the house the boiler / heating has never been serviced!

This is something that should be done every year - I think they might be breaking the law? I would look into it if I were you?

My favourite winter book is The Magic Apple Tree by Susan Hill, an account of the four seasons in her Oxfordshire cottage. It's one I dip into time and again, just to read a paragraph that evokes what I am feeling, or wish I was feeling! Recipes and garden advice too. ...

that's one of my absolute favourite books too, I bought it after I heard Susan Hill reading excerpts on Woman's Hour when it was first published; its a book I've never tired of. :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

My god it was cold here this morning, i caved and put the heating on (only for an hr mind). Mainly because the thermometer in ds2 bedroom said it was too cold 12c Bbrrrr!
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it before but while i was in my local morrisons today they were selling slankets for £10, i was only looking at these on the internet last night and saw the same ones being sold for anything from £11 plus p&p to £25 plus p&p. Anyhoo i got 2 one for me and ds2 to snuggle in and one for OH. I've currently got mine on while ds is running like a loon not even noticing the cold.

Thanks for the tip nicynoo08, went to Morrisons yesterday and purchased one of those slankets, its brill!! :j

Maybe you mis-read the OP's post, she doesn't have heating or a boiler from what I understood, only storage heaters, which is what we have here. I have never, ever had a storage heater serviced, are you SURE that they need servicing and is this something that should be taken up with my landlord?

"Storage heaters have no moving parts or internal combustion so are virtually maintenance free and do not require an annual safety check."

If I had mis-read the post, I was only going by what mustangsal had said personally that it was well over-due a service and that in the four years they had been there the council had never once serviced it??

I must look in my pound shop, or should I say €2 shop as they are now called! A small one would do me fine. I seem to remember Penneys/Primark has small hot water bottles last year with fluffy covers and they were quite cheap.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Cheerfulness be careful if you get reading the Little House books. When I was younger I read all of them and theres loads....

I used to love these when I was younger, might have to look for some when I go to library on Saturday, but will they be as good as I remember?
