Preparing for Winter

  • I attatched smartprice fleeces to my bedroom curtains last winter (never got round to taking them down & not much point now!)

They made a massive difference to the room which was always very chilly in the winter evening, also seemed to help with condensation on the window but im not sure how!

I have a pole with curtains which have eylets, i attatched the fleeces by a piece of ribbon, very easy to put & up & take down, well if it ever got warm enought to think about it!
  • I have never changed curtains either, just always keep colours neutral. What a good idea to use fleeces as linings! I shall get some and do this for the back bedroom.
  • Love this thread, have gone from money no object to nowt zilch zero and have read the whole of this thread throughout the day and been scribbling down lots of ideas and tips, many thanks, keep the ideas rolling.
The Ikea bargain was a good one, might skip along there tonight before we have to get rid of the car and have a mooch around.

nippyone i'm down on the isle of wight.

Well plans went to pot yesterday so never sorted out blankets or throws. ( had an emergancy trip to vet, cat got a brmable just in her eye)

Anyway as our extention is nearly finished i been starting to look for bits for it. and today in QS i saw the most amazing throws . they are a gorgeous deep plumy colour. so hard to describe. they like fleece one yet yet furry sort of the other. they look so thick and warm and snuggly. i amd think i am gonna be rash and buy new throws to match our new colour scheme as they are so much thicker than our current one's. only concern is not sure how durable they would be with kids. but did see thay had some plain fleece ones in a matching colour for £3 so may buy a couple of these for the children.

fleece curtains sound a fantastic idea. how thick and warm would they be. i'm getting lots of idea's.

i just bought some nice nets from ebay to put up at the big window to help with heat loss and privacy in extention. as for some reason that window is colder than rest. i have curtains but am now wondering if i can line them with a cream throw as the curtains aren't lined.

or would that be too heavy ? not sure. what will i loose by trying . Any thoughts?
  • Well my duck taped bubble wrapped window pane is coming unstuck AGAIN for the third time. Not sure what is causing this as I cleaned and dried it before insulating it a few weeks ago.

I think I will attach some fleeces the my bedroom curtains, just need to work out how now. The curtains have a header tape with the hooks attached to them and then the curtain rings attached to the hooks and then onto the curtain pole.

How could I attach the fleece to the header tape below the hooks level?
    • Cut holes in the fleece and attach onto a new row of hooks?
Also what do people do about sizing them to the curtain sizes? My curtains are 66" x 72" drop and 66" x 90" drop.
    • Would a normal size fleece fit and would you need one or two?
    • If too wide can you cut them straight in half with scissors?
I can feel the cold leaching up from the cellar which is below the living room, does anyone have any tips on what to do about this as I am stuck on this! The kitchen is always lovely and warm even though the cellar door is in there but the cellar does not run underneath

  • we have bought a woodburner (just waiting for delivery) that will do heating and water. it has a flat top so if we have a power cut (quite often) should still be able to boil water, cook beans etc.

Strating thinking about draft proofing out house (it's very old stone cottage)
I want to but curtains over the entry doors but they can then be arkward to open. is there anything that will help with that

I will compose a list asap of things that need doing!

  • Thinking about putting single duvets under bottom sheets for extra warmth, all our beds are 4'6 doubles and I think our top duvets are all 10.5 tog, what tog rating is best to go under the sheet? Will a 13.5 be toasty warm but too thick for the fitted sheets to go over? Will a 4.5 be too thin to be worth buying them? DD23, DS21 and DD17 are not happy bunnies but I need to leave the heating off for as long as possible and they're all early nighters, so making the beds as cosy as possible seems a great idea.

That's a good question... Earlier this year the matress on my side did something odd and I have a 'saggy line' running across my side of the matress. We don't really have the spare money to replace it so we put a duvet down instead and I was getting chronic backache with it

We have problems squeezing the bottom sheets on...

Flip it over. Hotels turn their matresses every few months... a total of 4 different positions to even out the wear on them.

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!
