Thanks I will try this, and also see if inelegantly wedging them around the rad will work, even if just for extra cold spells!

I do this in my hall - the radiator's beside the door - and it works ok.

there's def a real chill in the air here the last few days. yesterday i spent an hour of hard graft cleaning up the back garden here so i can get all of my deposit back when i move and i didn't even break a sweat if that tells you anything!

yesterday i finally closed my bedroom windows (in my normally very warm room) even at night and only once was i too warm so i think that's a good clue there's a bit of nip in the air!

i've even had to close the bathroom window as it's making a draught through the house brrrrr

still, i'm moving on the 1st of oct and there is nothing that will get me to turn the radiators on here before i move

i will turn them on at least once at the new place to make sure they all work properly before winter but i'm going to see just how long i can go without turning them on, i'm hoping for november 1st but at this rate i'll be lucky to get to mid october!

the new flat is upstairs and i've got someone next to me too so i'm hoping they feel the cold so i don't have too ;)
  • I can feel the cold leaching up from the cellar which is below the living room, does anyone have any tips on what to do about this as I am stuck on this! The kitchen is always lovely and warm even though the cellar door is in there but the cellar does not run underneath

My mum uses cardboard boxes flattened out and used under carpet for extra insulation. Works really well.

I need to get organised a bit more quickly! I have the curtains in but not the curtain rails!
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!
  • No way do we need heating on. Its still warm here, played my last game of outdoor bowls yesterday and was too hot. What I want is a good downpour for the allotment. Hope the nice weather lasts a bit longer but we do need rain. Our lounge room (flat roof extension) needed replacing so paid double and had a 'warm room' put on, this should cut our heating bills down quite a lot (so Im told). We do get £200 heating allowance so this goes into the household account to enable us to have the heating on all day during the cold spells.
  • Last night I thought I'd have a go at putting a fleece blanket on top of my mattress and below my fitted sheet.

Well I think I must have had the best night's sleep for a long while, I was toasty warm and comfortable. And the fitted sheet managed to keep the fleece in place all night.

So pleased I read this thread as I would never have thought of doing it

Still quite pleasant around here at the moment and no rain for around a week. Still only got the summer weight duvet on the bed at the moment.

Heating is staying off for a few more weeks yet! I think I gave in a couple of days before November last year and hope to manage AT LEAST the same this year. It's on a timer (2hrs morning/3hrs evening) and thermo set to 21 when it IS switched on anyway.

Definitely going to be 'Add A Layer of Clothing' here for as long as possible this Winter.

Making a draft excluder as I've realised where it's coming from now - base of front door where it's been cut to 'clear a fitted carpet' even though I've got vinyl floor covering just inside the front door and the keyhole - fridge magnet is going over the keyhole!

i've had an idea about the fleece lining of curtains. I am going to sew a strip of velcro to curtains just under header tape then a strip on the top of the fleece ( once cut to right size) so i can then just velcro together. so i can add for the winter and remove for the summer.

i'm not sure yet if this will work, but in my head it will. so i will experiment with it. What gave me the idea was in the argos book they had a thermal curtain lining which just hooked on to the exsisting header tape of curtains. so i was thinking i could adapt this method to suit.

Has anyone tried this idea ? does it work ?

    hiya

ive just started reading this thread from the beginning as this will be our 1st winter in this house and we are feeling the cold already.

Any ideas for a freezing cold bathroom we have a small radiator in there but it doesnt seem to do much for the room, the bath itself is cold to touch and has been all through the summer so we are dreading the winter.
