Preparing for Winter

That's a good question... Earlier this year the matress on my side did something odd and I have a 'saggy line' running across my side of the matress. We don't really have the spare money to replace it so we put a duvet down instead and I was getting chronic backache with it
We have problems squeezing the bottom sheets on...
We got a new mattress from Argos and surprisingly, it's been very good.0 -
I loved the feel of autumn when I went out this morning the air was crisp and cold and it made my walk all the more enjoyable!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

This might be a particularly dumb idea but might it be possible to fasten some loft insulation to the ceiling of the cellar?0 -

We had this in one of the small back bedrooms, which is over our unheated downstairs utility room. Even with carpet and underlay there was still a cold layer underfoot. After much mucking around with extra layers of rugs etc we got a joiner to take up the carpet, hardboard the whole floor and re-lay the carpet. Worked a treat and wasn't even that expensive.Val.0 -

I had a think about this too when I saw some insulation in Homebase that said for cellar ceilings. Better clean it out first! We had this in one of the small back bedrooms, which is over our unheated downstairs utility room. Even with carpet and underlay there was still a cold layer underfoot. Thanks, will do this when I decorate the LR and will hardboard all underneath and get some thick underlay and a carpet - will have to wait a few years for this unfortunately.
Looks like insualting the ceiling first then!

We did investigate getting a dehumidifier-anyone know whether this works? Sorry If i have posted on the wrong thread but I am still relatively new here......and WINTER stood out like a sore thumb
yes, they work (remember to keep thee windows closed though, otherwise you're dehumidifying the garden too!). They use very little electricity and it's certainly cheaper than trying to deal with the problem by heating - it also seems to reduce the need for heating particularly at the beginning & end of the season.0 -
It's starting to get nippy here although still no heating and no quilt on the bed...yet. Dont think it will be long though.
Katylou - i agree with greenbee they are very good and dont cost much to run. Homebase (i think or it may have been focus) have them discounted at the moment.£387.39/£196.46

No heating on yet - I think this time last year I would have put it on so I am holding on until the end of Sept and then take it day by day into Oct, see how long I last.
