You don't need a popcorn maker. If you just cover the base of a saucepan (which has a lid!) with oil, heat it and then half cover the base with corn. Put the lid on quick and when you hear popping take the pan off the heat and shake it. When the popping noise stops carefully take the lid off, it will probably be overflowing anyway. Be careful in case there's an odd corn that hasn't popped - you don't want hot corn hitting your hand. Tip corn into big bowl and munch! Easy peasy. You can then use whatever flavouring you like or even go mad, and do a butterscotch or toffee sauce. Not exactly healthy though.

Make sure you have a lid or you will be clearing corn from around your kitchen for the next 5 years.

We've always made corn like this, the kids love hearing the popping noise and trying to guess when it's all done. Then they have hysterics when one pops in the bowl!

I have been doing this all summer for my boys and their friends, can get a couple of big bowls ful for pennies rather than a couple of quid for the equivalent in crisps. They all prefer a little salt shaken onto it as soon as it goes into the bowl.

DS1 did some himself the other night, he left the lid off until after it had started popping, but soon sorted it, he put a little sugar on whilst still warm to get a sweet version.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).

bit of topic but just read ur post nicki. we were given some brand new french door. although brand new they were bought 17 years ago and just left in someones garden. they still have the plastic layer on to protect to upvc. but this was stuck on, never to be removed. i tried every product going. even one given to me by a window guy. ( i think it melted the plastic it so strong) in the end what i used was a metal scraper( used very carefully and it didn't mark to upvc) and then to get rid of the horrible sticky residue cillit bang grime and lime.
The windows have come up like brand new. i am so chuffed. it took me prob about 10 hours maybe more in total to scrap it all. but when i used the cilit bang i knew i done a good job. i am so proud of myself.
thought this might be worth a try for you.

As for getting ready for winter. i've got loads to do. not made any lists but kinda know in my head what i need to do. i'm just taking a room at a time. and i'm getting there slowly.

To be honest our way isn't exactly scientific. I tend to put the oil on to heat (electric cooker so not instant) ~then dig about in the cupboard looking for the corn that was there last time I looked. Then once found I have to hunt for scissors to cut pack open, and only then do I pour the corn in. so yes, I probably do heat it quite hot, but not usually till it smokes it could all burn then. After putting in corn, I take pan off heat and shake. If once the popping stops there still seem to be a few kernels in the pan, I might put it back on the heat for a bit, but it isn't usually needed. I never leave it on the heat when the corn is popping though. HTH.
I wait til they start popping then turn my ring off (electric solid plate) as it will easily retain enough heat to pop all the kernels.

Watch out whats the betting that there will soon be a shortage of popping corn in the supermarkets as everyone starts doing this.

  • Just got v excited to learn that Lidl are doing their hotties from next Monday (7th sept) - if they're the same as before, they have a nice wide opening so I don't get boiling water all over the place! £2.99 well spent if so!!!

    I've done a couple more jobs :D

    Still to do:
    • Remove all the sticky tape around the door/window from last years glazing film :o- In progress I attacked the window yesterday with Stickystuff remover and a paint scraper...took me 4 hours  There's still a sticky residue but I'll have another go at the weekend while DD is away.

I've also made a tempary "curtain" for the cubby between the kitchen and livingroom. Its only sticky velcro'd to the kitchen wall at bedtime (will put it up earlier when the nights start getting really cold) but it still makes a difference and my livingroom ends up pitch black when its up

if you get some Astonish oven cleaner(it's a blue tub and its a paste) and use that with a cloth to get rid of the sicky stuff, it works a treat and if you have upvc frames it brings the frames up lovely and white! i did mine last week with it!

where did you get your sticky velcro from, i need some to make a few 'curtains' for a few places in the house
    thanks
