Preparing for Winter

We got our logs for the winter delivered yesterday - a pick-up truck load for £65.00. First year we've bought in bulk like this, so hopefully they should see us through the winter.DFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt

God it was cold last night, I had to put socks on as well as the electric blanket. I've always thought of myself as a cold weather person (birthday Feb!!) but I never seem to be warm now, it's hard work to keep moving.
Anyway, thought it might be interesting to revisit this thread - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1591185 and I see I was whinging on about open plan living rooms back then, it's time I did something about it rather than using it as a topic of conversation!!
But some useful reminders anyway.

Thanks for the link Downshiifter, I'd forgotten it  I'll pop over and have a peruse on what I need to do, still not made the curtains
I got more than 12 metres of light green velvet from Dunelm in the sale for £48
Also I've been out and bought these slippers from Asda, I had the boot type ones last year but they are lethal when going up/down the stairs.

I love autumn and winter too:j....cant wait to get all cosied up while its cold outside and doing loads of autumn cooking and baking.

Well, we had our first taste of winter yesterday lol! At about 9.30am all the power went off, so we phoned EDF who came out within a couple of hours. Seems that somehow an underground cable had snapped and they had to get engineers out to dig it up and lay a new one... in the meantime it took out 3 sub-stations and half the village!
We had no power until ten to four this morning, almost 24 hours later! Luckily, BIL's parents had a generator we could borrow to power the freezers (containing £400+ of pork!) and the vivariums, but it meant a 3 hour round trip to get it. At least all the food and animals were safe though
It was quite nice having no lights, tv or internet for the day and night... made me feel all cosy with the candles going, eating my ham sandwich with a cuppa in the dark
Everyone i know takes the mickey out of me for having a whistling stove-top kettle (we have a gas hob), but guess who came running last night when in need of a cuppa as they all have electric kettlesLOL
I've now made two preparations for winter! It's mine and OH's birthdays in october (same day too!), and as MIL doesn't have a lot of spare cash, but a 9ft by 4ft by 2ft cupboard FULL of wool (and LOVES knitting), we've asked her to knit us an underblanket for our bed for our birthdays
She was really pleased with the idea, and so are we as it should last us a fair few winters!
ETA - second preparation was writing a list of bedding/blankets i need to buy in september/october, as we only have 3-tog duvets at the mo. I'd really like to get us all a heavy one each, plus a fleece blanket for over the topI might have a scout round the charity shops to see if there's any blankets that would do

Beki that sounds quite romantic to me
I think my underblanket is stored in the loft, it was washed before it was packed, I wonder if it has to be washed again when I take it out?
I do like the idea of a whistling kettle, I bet it saves on power.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I think I would wash the underblanket. If there was the tiniest chance that some of that itchy stuff from the loft had got into it I wouldn't be able to bear it.0 -
