Hi everyone, I'm going to have a look at amazon's blankets too.

The one thing that I'm not so keen on with winter is the fact that the clothes are not on the washing line enough, as I leave early in the morning and by the time I get home the clothes would be damp again or soaked through. So the clothes airers will get well used again.x

I've got Bank Holiday Monday off work so over that weekend I'm going to have a big sort out and see what we're going to need before I buy anything.
I know I need heavy curtains for the conservatory -we don't even use it, it's a glorified kennel, the dog sleeps in there.

I did post some way back that last Christmas I asked for and got a camping stove, kettle and some of the gas bottles. Maybe, if you are the practical sort like me and are all electric (like me) you might like to suggest this to someone!

I like to think that if we have a power cut I can at least make a cuppa or some supernoodles!:)

Angelite - I was surprised last year at how much washing I got dried outside, but when it was dark! I used to keep a close eye on the forecast and if it was windy but not wet, then my washing was hung out. Even if it was out for a couple of hours it made all the difference and I didn't have wet washing hanging about indoors for ages.

Like Beki, we've also got a gas hob as the rest of the house is all electric, so if (when!) we get a powercut I know that I can boil a kettle and if need be make a meal like macaroni cheese or sausage and mash. It's also good at heating up the kitchen!

It really annoys me when weather forecasters predict heatwaves BUT forget that the UK is a long narrow country and that it won't apply to all areas .

I was in Scotland in May (NW Highlands) and I think that could have been your summer - we had really good weather for two weeks then..

It's actually been a pretty good summer up this way again up until August began & it started getting a bit showery. It's been raining on and off today, but it's still really warm :)

Been foraging and jam making to stock up the cupboards for winter, plus gathered another bagful of pine cones. I now have 2 large cardboard boxes filled in the garage along with my pile of recycled newspapers, paper bricks, empty jars & bottles and the crate of homebrewed elderflower champagne.

I liked the bubblewrap theory, thanks to whoever posted about that. I'm about to line the loft hatch which, in our house, also doubles up as a skylight in the hall. We'll also do the actual skylight window up above that. We're going to try to floor another bit of the attic as soon as we get the wood and that should help a bit as well.

My biggest preparations for winter begin when all the heaters get switched off so I can try to keep the electricity useage at a minimum to compensate for the huge amount it costs to run storage heaters supplemented by an open fire. I don't use a duvet under the sheets on the bed but I do have an electric blanket and bought cheap summer double duvets (£6 each) that get used as throws. I also have legwarmers, which are brilliant, and I invested in a dehumidifier last year, which has made an enormous difference to clothes drying during bad weather. I now need to stock up on things that are suitable for using during emergency power cuts.

Someone said about cooking on their fire - do you use camping equipment on an ordinary log fire?
