I'm saving up for heating oil and wood and coal. Got about £50 put away so far.

We pay for our oil by direct debit and spread the cost over the year.

Re the flannelette sheets, I bought some last year on ebay. They're nice and thick and weren't expensive. The postage was reasonable too.

Im in Oz so its winter here already and its so cold at night, not what i had expected when i moved here recently. Reading this thread has given me some great ideas as to what to look out for in the sales for next year as i can be more prepared. Luckily I did bring my electric blanket with me as the nights are the worst, i just need some draft excluders and throws / blankets i think oh and extra cash for the bills :(

They have snuggies here (blankets with arms) they are advertised everywhere so i think i will get one if they go on sale once the sun comes out and save it for next year :)

    Thanks for all the ideas

  • Yes! Yes! I'm a squirrel too.. I want to shout it loud and proud! Most people around me think it's a bit sad to be longing for Autumn in Summer...but I can't help it. I am just waiting for the Sloes to be ready to make Sloe Gin. They seem to be ready earlier and earlier.

A lot of the cheap shops are selling their version of them too so they are cheaper :) Hopefully even cheaper come summer though, i will manage for now. I suspect it would be easy (for some but not me) to make one out of an old blanket.

better dig out my SAD lamp - or all my other preparations will be in vain if i can't get my backside off the sofa come November!

    Do they really work?
I get very depressed in the winter. I always put it down to growing up in France, Kenya and Cyprus! I have just come off of antidepressants, that I hve been on since January Ithink? So I am beginning to feel the yoyo effect of the mood swings already.
I am even wondering about the difference in the light in my sittingroom, and my dining/work room. I have thought about swapping them around so that I use the woodburning stove rather then the open fire. But fear that the room is a lot darker, and will that be cosy or depressing. Perhaps one of these Lamps would be a good idea!:o:rolleyes:

Has anyone experimented making paper logs? Thinking about building up a supply for those cold winter nights when an open fire goes down well but the machine is £20!

I have downloaded a pattern to make one of these! Cant remember where I put it, I will have to see if I can find it for people.

When I was taking DS's sleeping bags out of the car the other day, I also wondered if it would be cheaper to make a "boilersuit" out of a sleeping bag to make one of those new type of sleeping bags someone pointed out earlier in the thread. Certainly got to be cheaper then £79!!:o

I bought mine two years ago - and it definitely helped - the rest of the family hate it though...
