Im in Oz so its winter here already and its so cold at night, not what i had expected when i moved here recently. Reading this thread has given me some great ideas as to what to look out for in the sales for next year as i can be more prepared. Luckily I did bring my electric blanket with me as the nights are the worst, i just need some draft excluders and throws / blankets i think oh and extra cash for the bills :(

They have snuggies here (blankets with arms) they are advertised everywhere so i think i will get one if they go on sale once the sun comes out and save it for next year :)

    Thanks for all the ideas

    I found a pdf pattern for a snuggie http://www.sissonfamily.com/Sewingroom/images/2006projects/thesnuglet.pdf

Or you can get them on Amazon for £12.99

I know what my next four projects are

  • OMG I went into town today - the hottest day of the year and couldn't belive it when I saw Christmas cards and gifts in some of the shops already!
It seems that we can't enjoy one season before being rushed two seasons ahead by companies trying to squeeze as much dosh out of us as they can.

A big part of me wishes we had all those lufferlee stores close to us that a lot of yooze mention, but our nearest MrA is 45mins each way & Primarni somewhere east about an hour from where it used to be  Having said that, I'm not so sure I could contain myself with HB, Poundland et al on tap, so every cloud I suppose :o
I've dug out an old wooden curtain pole to use above the front door, although the curtain isn't that thick it will help dissipate some of the draught. Iggie lives under the stairs so we need to keep ventilation plus we've an enclosed porch so it's more cold air than anything, getting through the glass panel.
I'm on a mission to find the offspring good, heavy sweaters for crimbo this year so now the charity shops are changing over their seasonal stock, they won't know what's hit 'em :p I'm hoping to find some 'names' to sweeten the pill but not so sure designers make useful garments  ..most of what I've got previously has been pretty rather than practicle

It's the same here, I think the closest Mr T is 60 mins away and the closest Mr A is 1.5 hours away. Not even sure where our closest Primarni is, but I think it is around 1.5 hours.

There is talk of a Poundland in the old Woolies store, but I'm not sure whether it is true.

I find though that this means there are lots of small, independantly owned shops still left in the area, and sometimes you can find even better bargains there!

OK, I've been lurking on thi sthread for long enough, I think it's time I posted...

So far for winter I have:

Bought myself, my daughter and my 2 sons new Clarks boots all half price in Brantano.
Bought myself 2 long thick cardis in Evans, both reduced from £40 to £10.
I am knitting cardis for my daughter.
I have made plum chutney, plum jam, tomato chutney and blackberry jam, some for us and some for Christmas gifts. Waiting for more apples to make apple chutney, and may also make blackberry and apple jam.
Have bought material and lavender to make lavender bags for friends' winter birthdays.
Christmas is well on plan, have bought lots of pressies in sales and am making lots more.

That's all I can think of at the moment!

Sorry to ask such a stupid question but I haven't been watching the weather forecasts as it's been so cold, wet and windy here. We've had blustery, near gale force winds and torrential rain for past few days - where has it been the hottest day of the year? Our summer seems to have ended weeks ago and the blackberries are only just ripening here, some are still flowering. We've no large stores nearby but loads of cones, fallen branches, wind and rain. :D
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

It really annoys me when weather forecasters predict heatwaves BUT forget that the UK is a long narrow country and that it won't apply to all areas .

I think it got to around 30 deg yesterday in London - (the centre of the universe where forecasters are concerned!).

Was quite warm here (Liverpool) but really dark, overcast skies for most of the afternoon. So bad that I didn't want to risk putting any washing out to dry.

I was in Scotland in May (NW Highlands) and I think that could have been your summer - we had really good weather for two weeks then..

I'm on the north east coast,Tynemouth and it was realy hot and sticky yesterday.Very windy too.Did'nt seem too warm first thing but it came on all of a sudden and at 9 o' clock last night we were on the sea front and it was still 23 degrees.
Lovely and balmy but difficult to sleep.
Seems strange as the weathers been a bit odd this past week.
Best make the best of it while it lasts although it's grey and windy this morning but not chilly.
