Preparing for Winter

Like Mrstittlemouse says I got mine in Wilkinsons, cheapest moisture trap was £2.99 and they also did refils for £1.79 per bag. I put them together and onto the windowsills a couple of days ago but still find the windows are wet and puddles on the sills so not sure they were a good buy:mad:
I still get a tiny of bit condensation on the corners of the windows but not puddles.I'm wondering though are your windows single glazed because if they are and you have thick curtains there may just be too much moisture in the room for the traps to contend with.
In my living room which measures 5mx5.5m I acually have five traps hidden away in corners. Two of these are on the outer ends of the bay window behind the curtains and these fill up quite quickly.
In the other rooms one trap is enough as they don't get used so much and are'nt as warm generally.0 -
Teaparty Mum - welcome, although I'm new on this thread myself. Some great ideas here. I would also recommend the Weekly Flylady Thread, Thriftlady's Wartime Experiment and The Complete Old Style Recipes Collection! Definitely some warming recipes for this time of year!!! But basically, I just enjoy the whole MSE thing!:TDMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

Has Aldi run out of their thermal stock? I have got two of their sets (long johns and long sleeved vest for women) at £7.99 each and been wearing them in the last few days (wonderfully warm and comfy too!).
Caterina
I'll check Aldi's as well, thank you.DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

Our heating is unobtainable even if we wanted it at the moment and what is worse is NO HOT WATER  as we're having our boiler moved today. Unfortunate timing with the current cold snap we are having
However the thermal tops and fleece blankets have saved us from completely freezing to death. Hoping the water will be hot again by tonight as I need to wash my hair and don't fancy doing it in cold water _pale_
I've ordered a faux fur lined hat today as I get earache on the moors in the winter if my ears aren't covered up and it looks incredibly warm and cosy. I can't wait till it comes. I may need it indoors at this rate if the plumber can't get our boiler working again :rotfl:Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

Aw, HairyHoD, I hope you get your heating and hot water sorted soon, it is just not the right time for this to happen, is it, poor you! Best wishes for a nice warm cosy house soon and a lovely hot bath!

MrsTittlemouse - Windows are double glazed but your probably right that I just dont have enough traps to cope with the moisture level. Will have to invest in a couple more (after payday!!) and see if that helps any.Windowsare roughly same size as yours so if you have 5 my 1 isnt going to do alot!!:rotfl:
Hairyhandofdartmoor - I can sympathise with no hot water. Was feeling chilly and achey yesterday evening so decided to run a nice bath, set it running and went to potter in bedroom. Came back in looking forward to my lovely warm bath only to find it full of stone cold water as the gas meter had run out of credit!!

Thanks Caterina. The good news is that the plumber has put the boiler in it's new location and it's now all working again! We have water (hot and cold) and heating, yippee. :j
You don't appreciate these things until they are taken away. Choosing not to put the heating on (which we have been doing) is one thing, but knowing you can't put the heating on even if you wanted to is another. Somehow knowing the heating is unavailable makes you feel colder.
I bought an energy saving kettle today because we've been using an old fashioned type kettle on the gas hob, but with gas prices so high we decided an electric one would work out to be more economical. The energy saving kettle only heats the water as you pour it and you get a mug of hot water in 3 seconds. It claims to use 65% less energy. We've only had it half a day but I'm impressed so far. It was a little pricey at £59.99 but I'm hoping that it will start to save us money soon as we boil the kettle a lot. Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

Oh no Pips Mum, I would have been well hacked off.
I can't get into the bath anymore as I can't get out due to painful knees. I have to shower and it's not the same, is it?
I've been tempted to get into a really lovely hot bath, have my mobile phone, at the ready beside me and then to ring for the fire brigade, when I am ready to get out.

Oh, poor you, Pips Mum. It really is no fun not having hot water when it's cold like this. Worse than having no heating I think.
I'm looking forward to washing my hair in lovely warm water and looking respectable for DS2's birthday party tomorrow. We have 2 friends coming back for a sleepover afterwards so thank goodness the boiler is fixed. Not fair to inflict our discomforts on little visitors is it?
With regard to the moisture traps we get a lot of condensation on the single glazed windows at the back of the house but I'm concerned that the crystals for the moisture traps could be harmful to children. Does anyone know if this is the case? Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

Yes that's right, doing it by choice and knowing that you can always press the ON button if it gets too much makes all the difference. Glad you are sorted out.
Really interested in your comments re. the kettle, we have the same thing, gas hob kettle, and the wretched whistle no longer works so sometime we forget it and let it boil dry (what a waste!). You have inspired me to get a proper kettle, can you recommend the one you got? Thanks
