Preparing for Winter

Morning all. I was in town yesterday with DS and his GF who was in a wheelchair and feeling really cold. I had planned to get another fleece throw for home so bought one in Shaw's for her to use while we were out. It's great. I would say it's just about double bed sized, very thick and soft, and only £7.50. The only down side was they only had navy blue when I was in, but that's no big deal if it keeps you nice and warm. Might have to get another one!DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

hi everyone, A big thanks to this board on my Moisture trap. I bought one about 6 weeks ago from wilkinson i believe it was £3.75 and it comes with the inserts. The refills are £1.50. Admitedly it's in a very damp room especially since we've been drying clothes in there aswell. I was quite sceptical about the whole thing but it works fantastically. we had to tip away the water last week, it's unbelievable if only i had known about these things before. I've since bought 2 more for other parts of the house.
On another note, i've also purchased curtains for my bay window. The previous curtains were not lined and a very awkward size 90x80. I've since bought 90x90 lined curtains from ebay. They are nice to look at (though i did add a gold ribbon (£1.50) on the bottom since they looked a little plain) By adding the extra 10" to the length and them being lined the room is much warmer. I paid £27 incl del. for the curtain but i would definately recommend the seller. Hi all
Ohhh but it is good to wake up in a warm house, since putting the heating on the clock to come on morning and evening!
This morning I noticed that toilet paper in our bathroom, sitting on top of the toilet flushbox (or whatever it is called), was damp - I checked where the water was coming from and found that because the roll touched our wall (tiled) it was picking up condensation. That's it, I am off to Wilkinsons to get the moisture traps!
Have a good day all

We now have some sort of mould on the walls in the one bedroom, not a massive amount but it's there.
It's upsetting, this house is costing us a small fortune.
I've got a new hygrometer, in this room it's on about 65, I've just put it in the bedroom to see in a couple of hours what it reads.
We'll have to completely empty the room and use a load of neat bleach on the walls, then get some of the polystyrene ona a roll to cover the outside wall. we did paint it with damproof paint, it's not coming through from the outside though.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Have to recommend Marks and Spencer thermals. My long sleeved vest and long janes cost a tenner each, which I thought was a bit pricey. However, the vest is long and goes down to my bottom, and the long janes come high up my back...they also have cuffs at the bottom of the legs so that they don't ride up.
They come in black, grey marl and white. I got the black ones so that they would look better for longer. They are really really warm.

Thanks for the tip on M&S thermals La Farfallina - I went to T J Hughes but they only had XL bottoms - tried a set on - I know I wanted to keep warm but they went from me toes up over me boobs! - good job nobody saw them
Will now try Marksies instead. Hope you got your moisture traps Caterina - they really are worth it - yuk - damp toilet paper?????When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on :eek:

Hot water bottles need to be chucked at the slightest sign of wear or perishing. Rubber can rot quite suddenly and alarmingly. Not something to economise on I am afraid. I remember my Granny ruining a matress with a burst hot water bottle, I think she might have got burnt as well.
A shame as they are so comforting.

Well today I've put brush draught excluder stuff around parts of the front door (can't put it all the way around as the door won't shut then :rolleyes: Wouldn't mind but its a "new" door fitted 2 years ago), I've also put glazing film on the back of the door and the 3 livingroom windows (2 that open, 1 very big one!).
Still to do :- My bedroom windows
- DD's bedroom windows
- Kitchen Windows
- Bathroom Windows
- Glaze cubby gap kitchen side.
- Make draught excluders for kitchen/livingroom door and livingroom/hall door (possibly bathroom one as well
)
- Make curtains for kitchen/livingroom door & replacement curtain in livingroom (cushion covers & seat pads? So they all co-ordinate
)

This happened to my Mum! She and I were staying in a holiday cottage in Cornwall one Easter, and it was really cold at night. On our last night, Mum put the bottles in our beds while we did a bit of final packing and made a hot drink to take up with us. We went upstairs and Mum (forgetting the bottle was in the bed) threw herself into bed, declaring herself exhausted! Shortly followed by declaring herself hot and wet - the bottle had burst! Fortunately, the beds came equipped with mattress protectors and we got the offending hottie bottle out PDQ, but we then had to drape the damp sheets over the banisters and remake the bed using linens from the other bedroom. Mum wasn't scalded but she could easily have been!Obedient women are never remembered in History!
