Preparing for Winter

- sachets are better than tins as yeast keeps fresher - and fresh yeast is harder to buy and doesn't keep.
I buy those orange Doves Farm packets, then transfer the contents to a small plastic container and keep it in the fridge. I prefer the sort you can throw into the flour with all the other ingredients. Can't be doing with waiting for the yeast to froth up!0 -

It is slowly dawning on me that reading this thread doesn't actually prepare me for winter unless I do something about it so here is a starter list:
- Buy fleeces for kids' beds, to go under the sheet.
- Buy a fleece for the computer chair, or rather for whoever sits here! Am even wondering about buying slippers for whoever's here, as kids tend to put their feet on a hot water bottle which all adds up in terms of hot water. Will have to give a bit of thought to that one.
- Get a couple more hot water bottles.
- Get a timer for the immersion heater.
- Get insulating film for single-glazed windows.
- Work out what to do about kitchen door.
- Get key hole covers.
- Get sausage dog or equivalent for the back door.
- Investigate slipper socks for those children who don't currently wear them.
- Sort out insulation for rabbit hutches - I did them in part a few years ago: an extra layer of plywood on the outside, with roofing felt on the sides. The hutches are drier inside and have to be warmer. I might freecycle for a couple of bits of old carpet to drape over them as well, as current plastic sheeting isn't thick.

Miggy, I bought myself a new 2 litre hot water bottle in a nice soft, fleecy cover, for £4.99 at Superdrug, this morning.
I asked my OH if he wanted one and he replied, No, I'll just snuggle into you.
Cheeky!

RADIATOR FOIL is availble from DIY stores such ads Focus or B&Q. it is quite cheap. it is thick, like material, and does not rip. it comes with sticky tabs . very easy to fit and you do not need to remove the radiators."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

Good to know. All the fleecy blankets I found so far (IKEA, Primark and Morrisons) are 150 x 180, but I would prefer them longer, so the 200 cm ones in Aldi are worth a look. Shame they have no stores near me - I'd have to go all the way to West Drayton or Feltham, but then again my job occasionally takes me in those places, so I might have to wait but won't have to spend any time nor money to get there.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
