    HI all

I thought I had been all nice and wise, preparing for winter, ordered long johns and thermal vests for the family online, even got free postage and a 5% discount code, spent around £4 per long-john pair and thought it was a good bargain.

Just read on Netto website that the special offer this week was thermal long-johns for £2 each *SIGH SIGH SOB SOB*.

I am now debating with myself whether to use time (that I could use for doing work and stuff around the house) and money (the postage cost) to go to the post office, return the long-johns (one is already opened as I wanted to try it on for myself - it fits ok-ish) and then trek it all the way to my nearest Netto (upward of 1/2 hour each way by bus) and risk not finding any of the long johns.

I would save appx. £6, minus the postage. Perhaps I shall just sit here and grit my teeth instead!

    Sorry, end of whinge! :-)

Actually, the thought of wearing thermal long johns at home during very cold evenings is rather appealing. Not quite as sexy as a girl like me would like, but hey if hey keep me toasty when there's nobody else around... :A

    And there's a Netto just 10 minutes walk from where I live...:D

    Grazie Caterina! :T

Doesn't cavity wall insulation work a bit like a thermos, ie it keeps whatever is on the inside hot or cold, so you need to heat the inside of the house to feel the benefit, or the wall insulation just keeps the cold in

Ciao Quasar, chi non muore si rivede! Prego, non c'e` di che!

I have to admit that it felt weird when I tried the long-johns, because they are a man's model they have a fly hole in the front! But hey, need must and all that...so I am ok with the fly, it won't let too much of a draft in I hope hehehe

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Well, I've been out today and bought some cheapo tin foil in Tesco and intend to get it put up behind all my radiators at some point over the weekend. I've also bought a gorgeous soft chocoalte throw for our sofa which will hopefully keep us both snuggly and warm till November!!!

Feeling very good about my efforts and so far had a very positive day what with getting all my washing dry for free with this lovely weather too!!!

Just bought black thermal vests £5 each and black long pants £6 from M & S outlet. They don't look bad for the money, and no doubt I'll look stunning!

This is my to do list, maybe some of them apply to you frizzel81

    • Glazing film to living room bay windows, hall window, dd’s bedroom window, our bedroom, hallway window.
    • Dye and line hallway window curtain
    • Line hall door curtain
    • Check around all window frames for drafts and caulk if needed
    • Sweep chimney ready for coal/wood fires…we got brushes from b & q last year, its easy to do and not messy if you use a sheet
    • Make paper balls for fire…dries much quicker than home made logs and works well.
    • foil behind 2 radiators
    • Buy 3 new fleece blankets
    • Buy ‘sad’ energy saving bulbs…might work and cheaper than 6 months in the Caribbean
    • Check emergency box….torches with batteries, candles and holders matches etc
    • Keep looking in primark croydon for their fleece pj’s…they must get them in soon! Their fleece dressing gowns are really warm, worth getting one.
    • Make door snakes….ds1 pinched mine last week for his flat and has asked for help with the most of above for his place!
    • Check winter wardrobe jumpers, slippers, warm socks etc.
    • Buy single duvet for under my side of bed sheet, dh doesn’t seem to feel the cold like me
    • car emergency box: fleece blankets, torches/lanterns, water/juice, crisps peanuts etc, no good putting twinks hobnobs in they will get eaten long before they get to the car, jump leads, book to read whilst waiting for rac/hubby to rescue me, emergency mobile charger and an old payg phone with credit…just in case I leave home without mine. Also keep old jeans/jumper/socks to change into if get soaked trying to change tyre etc
    • Loft insulation still needed in small section of loft but, that means I must sort out the 8 boxes that got put there 16 years ago when we moved in
    • Buy Ikea tea lights…cheap and feels warm
    • Stock up winter food cupboard
    • Get more pallet wood DH has chopped some but need lots more

This afternoon, DH, DS and self were grabbing some late sunshine and actually sunbathing in the garden and yet after a few minutes of catching up with this thread, I was sufficiently chilly to change into snuggly joggers and thick socks!

I have to add there are some great ideas and thanks for the reminder to get film for windows.

Well I've been buying myself a few of those folding silverfoil-y sheet type things with suckers on that one puts on car windowscreens as a sunshield. Saw them in a £1 shop and thought "cant see any reason why I shouldnt stick them behind radiators on outside walls and with those suckers presumably "stick" is the operative word" - hmmm.....

Anyone else tried them - or am I in for a revisit to the shop to get my money back?
