.... My bread is still rubbish

I followed you recipe to the letter; It rose over the top of the pan like a beer belly but didn't get high and when I cooked it, despite smelling delicious, it was all cakey and had no taste. If it had been minty we could have used it for chewing gum. It would be fine for making toasties I suppose, I daren't take it for the birds or ducks as I may kill them.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am now positive I just can't make bread. I've tried
    • Lots of different recipes
    • Different oven temperatures
    • Initial mixing by hand, processor or dough hooks
    • Leaving to rise for different lengths of time in different places
    • Knocking back after initial rising and not
    • Different flours
    • Different yeasts (dried)
    • Kneading for ages / not
Am I just cut out not to make my own bread? :(

Errmmm...well you got me puzzled on that one then. Personally I'm using organic wholemeal bread flour, organic honey, fast acting dried yeast, organic olive oil, the water is 50/50 just boiled water and cold water, the salt is decent fine-grain stuff from health food store. Beyond that - err..'fraid I dont know quite what to suggest.

Put like that - then maybe its down to the breadmaker for you....but could be an idea to borrow someone else's first for a tryout if possible;)
  • :hello:

Sorry I cant find this thread..

I am really interested in hearing what temperature everyone finds comfortable at home. I am trying hard to cut back on our heating- am managing to only have it on about 2.5 hours a day at the moment as my OH and son can't see to cope with cold.

In our living room without the heat it is currently 18 C and with heating it is usually about 22 C.

I must admit I find it hard to study when it is 18 C is that normal?

Looking forward to hearing your views... :T

    Many thanks

Our house is 21 degrees. We were out most of the day so the sun streamed in. We haven't had to put the heating on yet since before the summer. (Just had loft and cavity wall insulation done).

  • I have no idea ... but the heating isn't on and hasn't been, yet.

    Hi booklover,

We haven't had the heat on yet apart from in the morning to give us hot water. There's a current thread with lots of tips on keeping warm so I've added your post to it.

This thread may help too: Avoid using GAS and ELECTRIC !
