Oh carp. My DD is coming to stay in a couple of days, so I was sorting out the sofabed. It's against the wall to next door, which is empty and damp. When I opened the bed up, I found that the mattress is damp and the springs are starting to corrode. There is a radiator on that wall, so it looks like I'm going to have to put the heating on just to try and dry the wall and floor out. Think I'll pop the mattress outside in the sun to see if it dries.
I'm really annoyed. The house next door belongs to the in-laws and they've known about the damp for over a year. Of course, with all the rain we've had this year, it's got so bad that the carpet in the living room in there has gone mouldy. They've been waiting for a builder they know to have a look to see what needs to be done, but he hasn't materialised.
    Grrr!

Hubby does this but i must remember to get de icer and a scraper etc for the car ,i prefer the trigger type deicer goes further than the can type and less cold to the touch and going to put a blanket in the boot along with a few drinks and cereal bars etc in case of breakdown etc..............any other car ideas?

I used to keep a spare mobile charger in my car, and always tried to have the phone fully charged before I travelled beyond walking distance from home. Or if you have an old mobile, put a payg sim in it (Orange used to do them free or for £1 each) and keep phone and charger in car

a good torch is a must, too, I used to have a big lantern-type one that stayed in my car all the time; remember to check batteries regularly though ;)

I found that blankets sometimes were damp in my car (no garage), so maybe the foil blankets would be worth a look?
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • I gave in yesterday and put the winter duvet on the bed. DH is recovering from a stay in hospital so is not his usual hot self at the mo.
I have to say, I had a lovely nights sleep and didn't want to get out of bed this morning. Still no heating on though :D
Off to Matalan this weekend to get flanelette sheets and hopefully 13.5 tog duvets for kids as they only have 7.5 tog. Apparently they are £6 each. Will also have a look to see what else they have that I may need. Last year I got a lovely faux fur/fleece throw in there which is still great after many washes.

  • Hi all!

I'm a brand new OS moneysaver, and I'm slowly working my way through loads of threads here! Lots to take in!

I just wondered if anyone knew of a pattern / instructions to make a padded lined curtain for my front door? I've seen them made up, but not sure how to go about making one!

Thanks to all of you for being so inspiring! We're at the very beginning of sorting out our budget and debts, and have a very long way to go, but we've made a start and don't feel like it's impossible any more!

try your local woodyard for timber forburning in wood burning stoves/open fires. our local place charges £100 a tonne which is much cheaper than buying it from the people who advertise it £x for a load. it does need to be stores for 12 months though , but you have to start somewhere

Welcome CB :hello: loads of help and information to be found here.

Years ago I used a cheap single duvet to line a door curtain, cheaper than the 'bumph' sold for the purpose (sorry dont know the proper name) hth :)

I was able to sew it to the back of the curtain and it hung between the curtain and lining. I hand stitched and then it was easy to take it off for the summer..

Kemp's is a great wool shop, I've never ordered from them online but their shop is opposite the hospital that my OH goes to for his dialysis so I've popped in there quite a few times.
