hi elljay-- you'd have to google for fireplace centres or look in the yellow pages, so you can actually see them - its a hard thing to advise on here. I love my fire and wouldnt ever live without it, it makes life bearable for me. I think you would get one sort for coal and another sort for logs...but logs arent as hot as coal. sorry not to be more help.

Thank you Mardatha. I've looked at different kinds but still have no way of knowing what's best, a lot of them seem to have the same loose bit at the front which could presumably drop down as mine does. what kind do you have?
  • Deb from Homespun Living has posted a knitting pattern for a cup cossie, these look really fab and I'm going to have a go at making some.

  • Loving this thread, so many fab ideas! It's nice to know we not the only ones who try to keep the heating off for as long as possible. I know some people who have started putting it on lready and even have it on at night

On the subject of flannelette bedding not sure if anyone has mentioned Northern Nights bedding from QVC? It's brill quality, we bought some bedding from there about 7 years ago and use it all the time and it's still going strong http://www.qvcuk.com/ukqic/qvcapp.aspx/app.nav/params.file.UKAHXCFV,1.class.UKAHXCFV.level.3/walk.yah.UKHG-UK97?cm_re=PAGE-_-BRANDSHOPS-_-FLANNELS

  • :( It is COLD today!

I have turned the office temp up a notch - now at 21 degrees, and have started to moan at the engineers when they come in and leave the door open....they are moving around site all the time and don't notice the temp, but I am stuck sitting here in the office.......

Guess it'll be time to put away my sandals soon, but I am stubbornly going to wear them all this week, then next week I'm on hols :j and when I come back....it'll be almost October, so time for tights (hate them!) or socks & boots.
My psoriasis on my feet gets worse if I wear tights & synthetic socks (and I'm allergic to wool) so I'm looking for some mainly cotton tights and/or long socks(and I am a large-ish lady with long legs, so both need to be very long or very stretchy!)...Any ideas anyone? I bought some knee-high socks last year, but DH tumble-dried them and they have shrunk :( .

    Keep warm everyone!

BTW - I don't think the temp control in my office is accurate - if my home one was at 21 I'd be too hot!

  • TVT - thanks for advice on shoeshop. Slippers haven't arrived yet but they should be here this week.

FairyElephant - the opaque cotton tights I bought in Mr A are 78% cotton, 20% nylon and 2% Lycra. Would this be OK or is it still too much synthetic? Some companies are starting to make products from bamboo - softer than cotton and very environmentally friendly (£3 per pair). Might be worth searching the 'net. Again Mr A sell some socks made of this combined with cotton but I don't know if they have any synthetic material in them as well.

Quite cold here last night and this morning and nearly broke my promise to myself about the heating before winter's even started!! Having had brekky and dressed up reasonably warmly I didn't succumb.

One point which might be of interest (although maybe I should post on the gas thread). I put my water heating on constant a couple of weeks ago to see if it used more or less gas than having it switch on for a set time per day. It used more - it's normally 3 or 4 units per week but went up to 5. I've now gone back to switching on for 1/2 hr a day (there's only me, dog doesn't bother with a shower!) and I'm now testing out the optimum water temp for 3 units a week. I'm also boiling a kettle of water for washing up, and another for hot drinks - make one, put the rest of the water into a thermos and it stays hot long enough to put some into a hottie at bedtime - got this idea from the gas thread. Sorry if this is off topic but it could save some pennies for heating.
