For your taste maybe. My husband gets through a jar of Colmans every week. Slathers it like jam on every sandwich. Ditto harissa. Then everything gets topped off with a coating of black pepper, and usually a fair few glugs of hot sauce too just to be on the safe side.
Talking about mustard POWDER - not the bottled stuff!
PS - make my own hot pepper sauce too!0 -
Hi
Why not just ask for salt & pepper ?
I agree with others that it annoys me if people smother food in salt pepper sauces etc without tssting but people's tastes are different so why not season to your own taste ?
I like things saltier than my husband so although I don't cook with salt I do add it at the table. My blood pressure is low so I don't need to worry about that & I cook from scratch so I don't eat alot of processed food with salt in it.
My daughter doesn't like spicy food so I often put tabasco / chilli sauce on the table for those that like things abit spicier.
Personally I would be more upset if someone felt they couldn't ask as it reflects on me as a host.

I don't see a problem with asking for it. On my first visit for a meal with my in laws I asked if they had any mint sauce. They looked at me as if I was crazy, because they were having chicken, but they got it out for me and then proceeded to add it to theor own meal, at which point they agreed that it was nice. And then after that they always brought it out for me, and it became a bit of a standing joke where they would tell me I was weird but proceed to have it themselves.0

I'd never think it strange if people asked for condiments
And I certainly wouldn't get offended.
Though when I'm at the boyfriends im usually on autopilot if we have food and get out all the condiments (for some reason he has peri peri sauce with most meals!)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It's enough of a pain when I make batches of Harissa and his hot sauce consumption is too ridiculous for me to attempt it. Just wish people would stop buying the really daft sauces for him as gifts. The kitchen cupboards are full of the sort that would melt plastic let alone what they do to your insides.
Ps - I like squidging a few roasted garlic cloves in my mashed potato.0 -
As someone who likes a bit of salt on their food, I often feel offended when people give me a disproving look when I add salt to my food. It works both ways. Everyone has different tastes and some like extra salt/pepper/sugar etc, I certainly wouldn't feel offended, (they wouldn't have problem in my house though) I find there are a lot bigger things to be offended by!Raven. :grinheart:grinheart:grinheart0

How do you politely get over the problem of eating regularly at somebody's house when they never put any condiments on the table? One of the married partners has blood pressure problems so understandably they never ever put any salt in their food but the meals are so dull without any seasoning I find them really difficult to eat. Would it be terribly rude to take my own condiments? Could you ever do it without offending ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I don't add salt to anything when I cook. I don't add it to anything I eat except chips or potatoes. Sometimes I cook from scratch without salt; other times I use sauces, etc which do have salt in them. I couldn't care less what anybody else does with or without salt. It's their body, their taste buds, entirely up to them, and has no impact on me whatsoever.
I don't know why you wouldn't just ask for salt. Chances are, they've got salt in the cupboard and just never put it on the table because they themselves won't use it. Even if they don't have any salt in the house, they're not going to be offended if you ask.
If you bring your own salt to their house without having ever asked for any, I think that would be weird.0 -
I had a cousin who became seriously ill and hospitalised, because as a teenager he didn't have enough salt in his body. I have cut down on the amount of salt I take - but I do make sure I have a little in my diet.0

Me too. I don't use sugar ever and I cant recall anyone I know doing so either - but I keep some in for workmens drinks.
Salt/pepper added, as appropriate, whilst I'm cooking the food and I don't put any on the table (because I don't recall seeing any on most peoples dinnertables - so the thought has never crossed my mind). But, if someone asked me for some....then yep...I'd get out my nice wooden salt and pepper grinders and "Help yourself" to some extra.
It wouldn't occur to me to be offended re something as minor as this and I would think it odd if anyone else felt offended. "Storm/teacup" to feel that way.0
