No, wean yourself off the salt, it's not good for you. Take a pepper mill though and buy one for them as a present

Apparently it's only bad for you if you suffer from high blood pressure or maybe some other conditions. As I have always had low bp I am liberal with the salt - as various people have said it's a matter of personal taste.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Just ask, politely of course. People have different tastes. I don't like pepper much but I always put out salt / pepper and other condiments if we have guests. As a host I would much prefer my guests enjoy the food I have spent time cooking than not for the sake of getting out the salt. I cannot understand how anyone would be offended.

My OH likes HP sauce with everything bar cornflakes ever has since he's been a boy. It actually a running joke between family and friends, we've been round to dinner where people have especially bought a bottle of HP for him (very nice of them) or I have been known to whip an emergency sachet out of my bag. No one is offended, it's how he enjoys his food. We even take a bottle on holiday.

I add plain mustard powder to my mash - not bottled or prepared mustard sauces. No salt added to colmans mustard powder.

Thank you - I've just checked out the salt content and it's very low indeed.

That'll be something I can have to 'pep' things up.

I love getting new low salt ideas!

Why not make up a gift basket filled with the things you would enjoy and give it to them as a thank you gift for cooking?

The recommended daily salt intake for a 'normal' adult is 6g.

Salt lurks in all sorts of foods, so it's easy to get up to 6g without realising.

Before I got Menieres I didn't add salt to my cooking anyway, but I miss things like bacon and sausages.

I envy you that you can have salt for your health!

Goldiegirl - never use prepared sauces, make your own, using fresh ingredients wherever possible - then you have control over what you eat.

I make virtually everything from scratch - things like tomato sauces for pizza bases, baked beans and mayonnaise.

I have a bread maker, and make my own bread. It does need some salt in it, so I use low sodium salt. i've been eating low sodium for a year now, and I've never eaten so well. I love it, and the fact that it controls my Menieres Disease is almost a bonus.

I never really had mustard that often before, so I had assumed it just came in bottles! :rotfl:

But now I like to try new things, to add interest to my food, without the salt - mustard will be a great idea to investigate further.

Only buy a small pot of mustard ..you only need the tip of a teaspoonful to add "oomph"!

For your taste maybe. My husband gets through a jar of Colmans every week. Slathers it like jam on every sandwich. Ditto harissa. Then everything gets topped off with a coating of black pepper, and usually a fair few glugs of hot sauce too just to be on the safe side.
  • I don't put condiments out and people just ask and I go and fetch. There was that episode of come dine with me where the women kept getting her chilli sauce out and everyone went mad. I don't know I'd rather what I served got ate and was enjoyed rather than someone not enjoying it. How long have you let it go on for and what condiments are you wanting?
