  • Oh, how many times I went through many of the above emotions about a variety of cr@@ppy pillows.
I remembered my mum's old feather pillows - the ones with pale candystripes! ( Anyone remember them? ) I seem to remember a "bolster" pillow too; a great long thing it was. :o
I like two pillows - as I sleep on my side and like my neck supported. ;)

Tried loads - and I do mean LOADS. (It's okay trying them in a shop OP, but what about when they're a few weeks/months/YEARS [ if you can find any that last that long] old? )

Foam? A few types .......... I'm a "hot" sleeper & these just make me perspire! Latex is the worst. And a wet pillow = not nice.
The usual - cheap to moderately expensive - artificial fillings? Invariably very poor after (at best) a few washes; lumpy/poor filling distribution and flatten easily.
Feather? Cheaper ones very poor - again (after at best a few washes) poor filling distribution and go flat fast. PLUS feathers-through-the-pillow syndrome! :p
Expensive - i.e. Hungarian down etc: tbh my favourite IF you can afford £100+ per pillow! Plus I find I don't sweat anywhere near as much as with artificial fillings (though see below). The last ones I bought were these : http://www.sheridanaustralia.co.uk/bedroom/pillows-quilts/pure-indulgence-standard-pillow-1.html#80=170&142=5
    Good, but not BRILLIANT.
The GOOD ones last years, wash well and do not go flat ........ well, not until (in my experience) you've had them for ABOUT 5 years.

The best option for MY needs:
    Spundown Pillows.

(I usually buy from Philip Morris - great service.)

They are SO good that I'm just about ready to replace our first pair after about 6 years constant use, and now all our (3) beds (& spares) have them AND their duvets!
Wash at 60, tumble dry & come out like new.
Firm on the bottom & medium on top suits me best.

The best bit is ...... at about £15 a pop they're not exactly expensive either.
Seriously, for anyone struggling to find decent pillows I say "give them a go".

Now, who do I speak to about commission? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I' we got a Tempur pillow. Cost a fortune and took a few days to get used to it, but it's great. The biggest problem is going on holiday and having to do without it.
  • I got supposed memory foam pillows from Primsrk. Had them ages and doing well. Cost £8 each.

We stayed in a hotel recently and the pillows were fabulous. Before we left I stripped the pillows and took note of the manufacturer. When I got home I rang the company and luckily they supply to the general public. They asked the name of the hotel and must have checked their system and I ordered the exact same pillows. Reasonably priced for feather/down at £11 each too.

    Happy!

Before spending money on a thicker plumper pillow, try folding over a large thick towel (or two) and putting it undef your existing pillow, if you only have one pillow. This may give you some idea of what neck height is most comfortable for you.

I find memory foam mattresses so sweaty - I don't think I could cope with a pillow! Thanks for all your useful info!
  • Do you have a Dunelm near you? They have all their pillows hanging up so you can feel them etc and test their thickness. In addition, they have recommendations for if you say sleep on your back or your side. I have to be really careful with pillows as if they are too high I get a really bad neck. Feather pillows are best for me - I poked and felt them until I found a couple that felt just right.

I remember my mother removing the changing the covering on feather pillows and bolster pillows. Think the fabric was called "ticking".

I can't have feather now due to OH asthma which is triggered by feathers. I've bought expensive and cheap and now buy cheapish ones and bin after a they lose their bounce as not worth washing. I find after washing pillows they lose their bounce anyway.

Just bought a pack of 2 slumberdown(?) from Asda in sale for £7. They are for side sleepers and are fine and happy to bin in few months at that price. I also have a V shape pillow for sitting in bed with. I bought it for use after surgery and I love it but chuck it off bed to sleep.

I use Comfort Zone from Dunelm. You can get a pillow depending on whether you sleep on your front, back or side. I had the same problem with neck and shoulder pain. These pillows help a great deal.

I used to use a down pillow under a synthetic fibre pillow. Didn't like the smell of the down pillow or the pokey outy feathers. I found after a lot of physio that I was starting to get a sore neck (having gone from extremely tense to relaxed muscles) and wondered whether the pillow was the cause.

I bought a discounted memory foam pillow from Tesco on a whim, and it's been great. I just use that now. I sleep like this but only with the pillow under my head/chest. Maybe I should try one of our many spare pillows under my leg. :rotfl:
