pillows??

An odd question.
How do you know what type of pillow to buy.
It's not like you can try them out like you can a mattress, I'd look a bit strange lying in the floor in asda homewear :rotfl:
I had a sore neck a couple of weeks ago, I didn't wake up with it and it just developed one evening, it's two weeks later and is noticeably worse when I wake. Especially turning to one side, it then wears off in the day now.
Trying a new pillow is an option.
When you lie on your back the gap between the bed and neck is considerably smaller than lying on your side, so how do you know how high to get the pillow? Or firmness, or even what it's made of?
All my pillows are cheap ones and I'm lothed to waste money on a more expensive pillow if it makes no difference.
Any advice?

I bought two pillows from Ikea, when I got home, i reaslied I'd spent 20 quid each on these pillows, picked up the wrong ones, and bought a lot of other stuff so i didn't really twig about the extra money [doh!]
However, best mistake i ever made, they're so comfortable, and the mould to your head or sleeping position and they fluff back up straightaway. They're feather pillows and I love them....and they're washable...Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -

What made you buy them, initially? Was it thickness etc? Or just a random good buy?Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I think the starting point is feather or not. I like feather, but they're not recommended for allergy sufferers. (They give my husband a runny nose.) Feather are more expensive. Cheap pillows aren't great in my opinion, especially if they are bulky.
And then to determine thickness, how you normally sleep. I'm a 'side sleeper', so I need the area between my head and shoulders supported. For that reason, I sleep with two thin pillows. The top one is feather, the bottom one a stuffed one which keeps its shape more. I like the way feather adjusts to your position, a bit like foam ones do. DH sleeps with one.
Grab some pillows or cushions from around the house and see what you find comfortable?0 -
Go to a store like John Lewis or furniture village etc. They should have pillows on their beds so you can lie down and try different styles.
I'd recommend memory foam. Better than good feather for moulding and supporting. Our memory foam pillows and mattress really help our backs and necks.
They cost around that £20 mark as I recall but were worth it.Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -
Decent pillows are sold at shops where you can test them, so do that and buy there or look for the same pillow elsewhere to see if it is cheaper.
I use a traditional shapes memory foam pillow from tempur.0 -
I bought some new ones recently from John Lewis - I think they were about £10 each. I bought one hard, and one medium, so I can switch them around as necessary. After experimenting, I've found that I prefer to sleep with the one hard pillow, but both is better if I'm 'lounging' - i.e. reading or sitting up in bed.0

Don't talk to me about pillows! :rotfl: The amount of pillows I've got through, too hard, too soft, too this, too that! I just couldn't get one that suited.
Then we stayed in a hotel and they had the comfiest pillows ever, both my and my husband commented on it and got a good nights sleep. Someone mentioned to take the pillowcase off and check the make (I didn't think of that....duh!) and they were these ones http://www.richardhaworth.co.uk/clusterfill-pillows I promptly ordered 2 when we got home.
I'm a side sleeper, and I always had the problem that my neck didn't seem supported well enough, but these seem to do the job!0 -
I've got white company feather pillows - so comfy!0

I go by how washable they are. At the moment I'm using a M&S pillow which was quite cheap but I can put it in the washing machine at home, and tumble dry it.
I've never bought a feather pillow, mainly for this reason. With feathers you've got to make sure they're absolutely bone dry otherwise they stink!
OP I would look at reviews on the various websites of companies that sell pillows, Debenhams, M&S, etc if you don't feel comfortable trying them out in the store.left the forum due to trolling/other nonsense

I decided to 'upgrade' to feather pillows recently, sooo comfy but gave us both neck ache! I'm hoping to try mine out again soon but I think it put him off for life!0
