Apologies if inappropriate but have posted on new thread here as thought I was going off thread and I need help.

    Thanks
I have been told that by downloading avast, if there was another anti virus installed(which I think there was), that this will kill my system. This is what seems to have happened since I cannot get started. Any suggestions on what I should do now?

    Thanks

Can you say exactly what happens when you switch computer on? Do you actually get into Windows at all? (I assume you're using another computer to post at the moment)

You could also try posting on the avast forum for assistance

Go to control panel>add remove programs and see if you can find Avast. If it's there uninstall it.

Running 2 antivirus programs on a computer is not recommended. They can cause conflicts with each other and completely muck a computer up.

Yes i'm having to access this through another computer. I can't get into windows at all. The system seems to have either frozen or died. I have also posted onto the avast forum.

    Thanks

On the subject of Trojans and the like I read some favourable reviews of a new, FREE, anti-virus program which actually got higher ratings than AVG in one of the Web Mags I get.

I installed it alongside AVG and it found three trojans on my system that our former favourite had missed completely!

    For more info.

    Hi,

Another free alternatibe to AVG is AntiVir Personal Edition, for Windows 98/Me and XP (XP&2000&NT), Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD & Solaris, further details including a download link can be found at the following URL:

    http://www.freeav.com/

One thing though, whilst performing an update AntiVir tries to act as a server :-(, don't like this admittedly, however, if you have a firewall installed, let's say for arguments sake ZoneLabs, this activity should be detected and you can deny the software from acting as a server, otherwise imho a good freebie Anti-Virus download.

    Best Regards.

I've finally solved the problem and have uninstalledavast. Thanks to everyone for advice. I was particularly helped by another thread which was running in response to an enquiry from browntoa whose computer had frozen. I wiil post thanks there also. The problem seems to be in trying to install avast when another antiviruss is installed. For those ignorant about computer techno;ogy like me, BE WARNED.

    Thanks again

    Umm! What's a download accelerator?
    Excuse my ignorance!

Margaret, look on here for threads referring to "Onspeed" which compresses files so that they download quicker, though there are other programs around that cost nothing. But why not just let it download when you aren't doing anything else like Saturday morning.
There is a difference between Onspeed and download managers.

Onspeed uses compression algorithms to reduce the amount of data sent and hence increase the speed. However it is only used on certain types of files, particularly graphics and text content ie webpages. It will not enhance already compressed formats such as mp3, jpg, zip, etc, nor downloads of program files or virus updates.

Download managers work in a different manner, usually by finding mirror servers for the same files and using more than one at a time. In the past some of them were notorious for installing spyware as well, but I do not know if this is still the case. It seems to me that there would only be an advantage if the one particular server you were using was running slower than your internet connection, so the spare connection capacity would be used with a different server.

So I stand to be corrected, but I tend to think that whilst new program file downloads might be able to be speeded up in this manner, new vdf files to update anti-virus products are less likely to be enhanced, as there is only one source of the product, or if there are mirrors these are managed within the virus update program itself.

In my own case I have Antivir from H+BEDV. The update program seems to search successive servers and then log in with one particular one then use only this one. Sometimes it's slow, but if I'm doing browsing at the same time, that means the browsing is faster.

Nothing can accelerate your ISP speed. Apart from paying more money to get more speed.
