    Hi

I've been using AVG for couple of years and had no problems on my main home pc. I introduced Avast on the most recently purchased PC as I have created a network and found no problems with it.

However, this week the AVG pc had a Trojan on it which had hijacked my default IE homepage. Took me ages to resolve with assistance from friends. Now upgraded to Avast and installed Firefox.

    Thought this might help someone.

From email sent with key -
"It is recommended to update your virus database and program via the iAVS service to ensure the best protection: Right-click the blue icon representing the resident protection (a) in system tray and choose UPDATING -> PROGRAM UPDATE and iAVS UPDATE. To update virus database only You can just click on the "flash" icon in simple user interface. An active Internet connection is necessary for the update process.

Future updates of virus database will be done automatically. The new updates of software are announced by blue notification windows but you should run them manually.

I've been using avast for a while now and it updates at least once a day. Might be worth checking the update settings. Right click avast icon and choose Program settings then Update(basic) and choose Automatic.

The avast forums are useful for info

  • i believe avast is far superior to avg.

i used norton untill the years sub ran out, changed to avg all ok i thought but slowed the computer down, tried avast and found 30 viruses that the other two could not find. i stick to avast now. funky graphics too. check https://www.download.com and see the superiority avast has over avg.

I'm not good at all this techie stuff but have downloaded avastas recommended. Its all up and running but I have a f ew questions:
    1. Do I have to check all 3 scans ie hard drive, removable media disk and the last one all separately.
2 When I got the log there was 57 items it said it could not scan but no virus found. What should I do about the ones it could not scan because reading it most of them are Lavaware files (from the adaware).
    3. When I scan things and get 'results' I'm not sure what to do with them.
    4. If the scan finds probelms does it automatically fix them?
    5. I clicked on the known viruses and hundreds came up - hopefully this means I've not got them and the programme is just telling me what's out there.

I know this is probably very basic to you tech-heads but I am just muddling along and would be greatful for help. No good having the tools and not being able to use/understand them. Ta.

always used avast.. well for a couple years at least.. really recommend it! :) Did use AVG for a while but decided to switch back.. the old avast interface was better though - you have to pay for that now :(

Yes been running avg for a long time now . Time for a spring clean I thought - glad I did install AVAST it took about 2 mins to download and a further 30 mins to scan my hard drive . Found a load of trojans and malware which avg had picked up but not deleted . Thanks andy for this great program!! :j

I'm installing AVAST at present but rather than taking 2 minutes to download, it has been over two hours so far!
    Am I doing something wrong?

I would suggest that you try again. Perhaps you need to disable your present antivirus while installing. It should only take a couple of minutes.

I'm using Avast and I like the way it tells you that the "virus database has been updated" (in an American accent) - ok unless the kids have had the speakers turned up!!

Re which options to select that someone asked - it's up to you whether you opt to check the removable media or not.

I've found with the settings I'm using the scan takes longer than AVG.
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........
