Lack of publicity over England's shops charging 5p a bag

Ah man, the 5p bags....
Queuing up in a shop, waiting to buy a 40p bottle of water.
Woman in front of me is faffing round with some children's toy trying to argue that it was advertised as £6 (it scanned as £16 and then went down to £8 as it was half price) - all over £2. She also buys a bottle for 95p and yes the total balance comes to £8.95..... Can you see what's coming?
Assistant: "Do you want a bag?"
Her: "I've got my handbag"
*Assistant hands her change of a £20 note, which is £11.05, and she promptly puts it into her purse and then into her bag*
Her: "Can I have a bag please?"
The people immediately behind me were discussing how they now need to pay for bags, and how outrageous it was.... I felt like topping myself right there0 -
People in Tesco, today, seemed to be buying less (didn't see any overflowing trolleys), so perhaps they are buying to fit the bags they have.
The only person I noticed without their own bags was a lady who always hangs round the veg section, waiting for last minute reductions, so I wonder if she asked for a reduced price bag.0 -

Well that doesn't really work though does it. Sooner or later the people you claim to be buying less if they really are buying less will run out of food!0 -

Or more often or simply eat less...
I seriously cannot see the bulk of the UK will now eat less because carrier bags cost 5p.
Or if you plan and buy bags for life a 50p upfront cost which is then forever free.
Anyone who think the human race will change their food buying habits due to carrier bag charges is deluded!0 -
Took my Sainsburys bag for life to Tesco yesterday and it only just held all my impulse buy reduced bargains! Now have one in my coat pocket as well as the one in my shoulder bag - a bit bulky.
I wasn't very happy about packing some fluffy slippers in with a plastic bottle of milk, but judicial layering of other items kept them intact. In the good old days I'd have automatically put clothing in a separate bag. Before now I've had pasta ready meals leak in the bag, have to check carefully in future.
(I know I should make my own pasta meals, before anyone points it out!)I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

As we've had this for years in Wales I can tell you that we do actually impulse buy less. From office chatter we all agree that if we shop in our lunch hour for food from local supermarket we limit our buy to what fits in the one bag we usually have with us as we are usually on foot.
Doesn't affect us on a big shop though as if we fill up our bags we just leave the rest in the trolley and stick in car boot (I usually have spare bags in boot anyway but sometimes misjudge how many I need to take into shop).~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

I've certainly bought less from M&S since they started charging for bags a few years ago. I would often pop into M&S when I was out for a walk. If I forgot to take a bag with me, I would limit myself to what would fit in the small free bags. No more impulse buying for me now unless its essential and urgent.0
