My local Tesco seem to have put signs up now.

It feels very much like no one thought about it properly until very recently.

And I still haven't heard it mentioned on the news, unlike when it happened in Wales and Scotland.

    This isnt Armageddon.
How much notice do people need?
At worst they get hit for 50p at the till.

I haven't heard any publicity regarding the new charge for bags so think I will be buying a few bags for life on my next shop!

Which stores still do 'bags for life' ?

I looked in our local Tesco and could only see the newly upgraded checkout bags and some pale blue ones at 10p, with no mention of replacement, plus the usual more expensive bags (plastic or hessian) with various designs and placed further from checkout points.

I'm not saying anything about it being Armageddon or anything like that.

I'm just still surprised that there has been so little effective notice given, especially when you think that in the run up to it happening in other parts of the UK it was mentioned on the news repeatedly for weeks ahead of time.

It feels like no one in charge thought to publicise it until fairly late in the day.
For example the self service tills should surely be able to have a message about it, as Tesco's ones already have the "did you use your own bags" so adding a line of text "after X date you will be charged for bags" would be relatively easy as they're going to have to make a change to ask how many you used anyway (unless it's going to be down to the harried assistant to enter the bag numbers from their terminal).
  • I don't remember anything much being in the news in the lead up to being introduced elsewhere in the UK.

Tesco still do and cost 10p so they were most likely the bags for life. Asda also definitely do them.

Here in Northern Ireland it was all over the local new stations for weeks before hand. We even get updates about how many less bags are being sold.

The 5p charge includes 0.83p VAT. This will raise millions for the Government.
