    That's ok, you're welcome.

That's a lot of working out and explaining to by shop staff who probably have little interest in the nitty-gritty of the exemptions and are unlikely to have guideline to hand.
Let's hope that Tesco, Asda, et al are training their staff as we speak. ;)

I had an email from waitrose explaining about this last week and how they intend to charge online deliveries for bags.

Seen nothing anywhere else about it, but like others being an Aldi/Lidl user won't bother me too much. Nice if the stores do some good offers on the hessian type bags so I can pick up some more of them cheaply.

Went to a health fair today and curtesy of the NHS got a lovely cotton bag with some leaflets and info in. Nice for me free bag, bit daft for NHS using cash to buy said bags when budgets are being cut hmmmm.

Well the Tesco checkout lady I spoke to, last Sunday, said they didn't know what was going on. She even said that fellow staff had wondered whether they would reintroduce better bags , which could be given away and also were good enough for several uses.

Apparently, Sainsburys are ceasing the provision of any single use bags and will charge 5p or more for stronger ones.
  • Waitrose had a big sign up today & I was aware beforehand anyway.

I wonder if you have read any of the thread. ;)

There are lists of the exceptions, or links to government webpages, in more than ten posts on this thread.

Not sure this will lead to confusions, as the listed exceptions are situations where the retailer doesn't have to charge for a bag.

If a retailer has any sense, he will charge for all bags - there is nothing in the legislation to stop that - thus avoiding the confusion.

I read most of the thread, but not all, hence my comment.

Perhaps, 'confusion' is the wrong word but imagine if someone bought a joint of beef and a pen, accepted the free bag for the meat, then popped the pen into the bag, causing the checkout person to demand that they now pay up and the customer getting upset.

Think it couldn't happen ? Well perhaps you haven't seen the people in our Tesco, who will push and shove, after waiting half an hour for the reduced veg to be bought out, in order to grab half a dozen pieces of cucumber going at 4p each.

But as I said, there is nothing to stop the seller charging for a bag that has a joint of beef in it... even if there is no pen in it.

Oh yes, I can see all these problems cropping up.

So it looks as though (or people on here think) the English are less intelligent than the rest of the UK if all these assumed problems are going to occur when the rest of the UK managed to transition to paying without any major, or even minor, traumas

I think of this is the only worry people have then they have a very good life

    It's 5p.

If that was a massive issue for the shopper I would suggest they take the pen out of the bag and put it in their pocket.

All the large supermarkets know how to implement and deal with it. They do it everywhere else. It's just a case of attempting to educate the staff in how it will work.

The bags in Wales are the same as the bags in England so to answer the question - No they are not going to introduce better bags. Don't like paying 5p for a single use bag? Then you need to remember to take your own bags. It becomes second nature after a while
