I have been summoned to my parents. Their bank no longer does probate so I think I may be requested to be an executer to the will. Does anyone have experience of this?
Yes, and there's no need to be scared of doing it if you are careful and methodical - but if you agree, tell your parents you need to know as much as possible about their finances and where to find important paperwork like ban boks/birth and marriage certificates/house deeds/car documents etc *now* before they become too forgetful to tell you. PM me if you want to at any time, and I can at least recommend a helpful book on the subject of probate. (I am not a solicitor but have acted as executor 3 times.)

Hope the doctor's appointment has gone well for DD2's DF, CY.

Off to the dentist soon.... In the meantime I'm trying to clear the top of the CoD.
  • Thanks to everyone last week with their advice about SW, I think I might look into it! Only just managed to catch up with last weeks thread so had to post in this one!

    Hi all

Just checking in quickly, bathroom is done, going to start making a chicken pie before I take DS to the docs.

Got very worked up over something fairly trivial at work this morning. I can feel the old anxiety creeping up on me again. I sort of know why but I hate it. Wish I could beat it for good.

CY glad things are going well.
DizzyImp it's really hard, but focus on the things you have managed to do rather than those you haven't, even if it doesn't seem like much. Hard I know. Hugs anyway.

    my list today went:
[STRIKE] fitters and windows arriving about 8am ugh doubtless they will need tea before they start[/STRIKE] fitters arrived before the windows, but all met up in the end. They have done my office and a bathroom so far. Quite impressed, I am going to spend hours sitting at my desk watching birds (even more than usual) as the new windows are "whole" i.e. without cross-pieces, and clear i.e. not old and blown with condensation
    - [STRIKE]put slow cooker on as we have overnight visitors on their way to the airport[/STRIKE]
    - [STRIKE]Gym. Probably Insanity![/STRIKE] Did Body Pump AND Insanity. Shattered.
    - [STRIKE]Review calendar. I know I am seeing 2 students on Wed, and having coffee with a new colleague at uni.[/STRIKE]
    - I have a huge list of miscellaneous "stuff" I won't bore you with. Working through it now. 1st item was a nice one - ordering some cheapish Penstemons as they grow well in my garden.
Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.

Dancemum - being an executor is fine - in fact it is far better for you than the Bank doing it, as they will charge the Estate an arm, leg and soul for the privilege, and do it at their speed, not yours.

You do need to be organised and methodical, and it can depend on the complexity of the person's affairs, but, this can be straight forward things such as changing the name of the person a bill goes to, notifying the Council that there is only one person in the property and so on.

The other thing is, that if there is any part of their affairs that you feel is too difficult for you to deal with, then you can appoint a solicitor yourself to deal with that one part of the estate.

Personally I have always named my own Executor, a relative, but it can be a friend or someone you trust to carry out your wishes. I would never, on the grounds of cost alone, appoint a Bank or Solicitors - their costs will be in the region of £120+ per hour of work, so money will disappear very quickly.

Meanwhile, flying (I am supposed to mention flying) has mainly consisted of weeds (which are not growing in my house, but are overtaking other parts of my life) and ironing. The good news is that the bottom of the ironing basket is now visible following a couple of weeks of doing something every day.

dancemum as the others have said, if it's not a very complicated will with trusts etc then DIY executors are better in the sense of not having to pay someone. If it's for your parents, and they are redoing their wills - it may be an option to attend with them and perhaps ask questions about lasting power of attorney and any other things they recommend.

I'm now executor for my inlaws wills, as their solicitor wanted to charge 15% of their estate to do it! As my kiddies are the beneficiaries they didn't want any value eroding by lining someone else's pockets...

Frog eaten in the form of a share certificate that's been stuck to my fridge for a couple of months :o

Cos I'm that good at paperwork (err, see the above )

Feeling quite pleased with myself (and totally cream crackered and in dire need of a bath).

I've Dys0ned the entire bungalow to within an inch of it's life, cut the back lawn and pruned three overgrown and very untidy bushes. The green wheely (garden rubbish) is now full, which is great as it's bin day tomorrow.

Also found a load of defunct paper rubbish lurking in my desk to go in the pink sack, so that's pretty full now.

It's scrambled eggs for dins (still on soft food) and hopefully Mr LW will run me a bath once we've eaten.:o
