The problem with leasing is when you come to the end of the contract. Instead of having some potential deposit for the next vehicle or just plain old keeping the car, you're left with nothing at best, and a repair bill for any damage at worst.

True MSE advice would be to keep running what you currently have. Then it would be to buy a used car which you can 100% afford. However, if your heart is set on a brand new car, look towards a PCP deal, you'll get similar rates but at least potentially have some equity/deposit at the end of the term.

Also, is the pug the be all and end all? Because you can get much better deals on much better cars. The VW Up is usually on a good rate, a quick search and I've found a top spec one for £150 a month: https://www.firstvehicleleasing.co.uk/car-leasing/volkswagen/up/up-hatchback/1.0-high-up-3dr . I'm sure it's Skoda and Seat siblings probably also com on good deals too.

At the end of the 3 years could I not just give it back and get something else brand new? Even if I wanted to just give it back and walk away I'd still have savings to buy a used car, though who would want to having driven something so swish!

The pug isn't the be all and end all but it's the only one I've seen that has the just add fuel offer, plus I like to upgrade on features every time. So this time I would also like sideways handles on the outside, digital dashboard with mpg, telling me how much farther I can get on the petrol I have, service indicators, keyless entry (the push to go button is a bonus!) and the multimedia touch screen just seems fab, plus it has satnav! :D But it also has to be small (about the same size as my Ka)

So it can take a while for me to find a car I like but I do really like the Pug 108. I know the C1 and the Aygo are basically the same car as they were made together but the Pug is better looking

and I'd still have to pay for insurance, maintenence etc myself

What maintenance? Oil change half way through the contract? Not much more than a fiver a month even at main dealer prices...
Do you live in a high crime area? Okay, I'm older but insurance for my 208 was never more than £120 a year courtesy of gomoneysavingconfusedmeerkatswitcher or whatever dot com.

I mean servicing and such, or if there's an electrical fault I can just take it back to them and they can sort it for me. Otherwise I have to take it to local garage guy and pay god knows how much.

I don't know about high crime, but I've already done a few insurance comparisons and it'd be about £60 a month plus initial payment :/

How do you work it out to know at what point it becomes too expensive?

I get that you're paying extra for the fact that you get to drive this fancy, shiny new car, but that's fine.

Gut feeling, other lease deals i see available, and it just seems an awful lot for a 108

With a quick check, broadspeed.com will supply the car new for £9,439

    https://broadspeed.com/CarView/Peugeot/108/38917/PureTech_1.2_83PS_Petrol_Allure_Manual_3_doors

Assuming you can rustle up £1439 either by trade in or cash, you can get a loan for £8,000 over 4 years @ £234 and you'll own the car at the end of it

So I'd have to pay nearly £9,500 plus insurance and any servicing and things, I'm stuck with it for an extra year and at the end yeah I'll own it but if I want to change it I'll have paid more than I would have done with Just Add Fuel wouldn't I?

But you'd own the car rather than be renting it.

You would have options to change it if your circumstances change, and at the end of it, you'd have an asset worth several thousand OR you could drive on at it.

As the title says I'm thinking of going for the new Peugeot 108 on the Just Add Fuel scheme and I'm looking for some advice and opinions.

I'm 27, will have been driving for 6 years this November, and have a NCB of 6 years currently. I've always bought my cars used with cash with the intention of upgrading (in terms of new-ness and features) every time. My first was a 2000 Ka Collection, already 9 years old when I bought it for £1k. I had it for 4 years when I part ex'd it for another Ka this time a 2007 Zetec which was 6 years old at the time, for £2k.

I drove past my nearest dealership yesterday and saw the advert, looked into it more when I got home. From my details it looks as if I could get the Feline trim for about £240 pm if they take my car as a deposit. Never been to a dealership before though so I'm guessing I could haggle that down?

My first thoughts are can I afford £200 a month, which I can. And what if my circumstances change in 3 years. I do have savings so if I had no choice I'd use that.

I've looked at threads on here about it but what I've found seems to be at least a year old. Just wondering if anyone had any recent opinions or experiences with it?

    Thanks :)

You pay £240 per month for 3 years (I assume it's a 3 year term? Is there a final balloon payment for you to own the car outright?) = £8640. You also use your old Ka as a deposit - about £900? So you'll pay £9540 for a car which includes servicing and insurance - equivalent to £3180 per year.

The Citroen C1, Peug 108 and Toyota Aygo share a lot of the same parts underneath the bodywork...

Now look at this deal: https://www.contracthireandleasing.com/car-leasing-companies/main-dealers/richmond-citroen-portsmouth/citroen/c1/56849022/

You pay £2424.50 for 2 years driving the C1. How much would it cost to insure the C1 over 2 years - £900? Use the money from the sale of your Ka to cover the cost of the insurance. Servicing the C1 should cost you no more than £200 (£100 per year). The equivalent yearly cost for the C1 would be £1762.25.

That's over £1400 cheaper per year in favour of the C1...

In theory you can just return the car after the 3 years are up, however in practise it is often more complicated as they will expect a car that is in pristine condition. That means, if some sod dings your door in a car park, you pay to have it fixed. This can get even worse if the car needs any repair work (you should see some of the threads on here when it comes to returning a car that has been repaired).

You seem to have made your mind up, so really the only other thing to contemplate is the mileage limit on the deal and if you'll comfortably be able to keep within it.

Why would you have to take a new car - leased or otherwise - to a "local garage guy" and pay "God knows how much" when it would be under warranty? If you've any sense, you'll arrange to have handed it back before the first tyres and brakes are due, so there's no "and such" in the running costs.

That will make a big difference to comparisons. Silly question - what happens if you have an accident whilst you're just adding fuel - will your monthly bill go up?
