E.ON price hike!

Yup - definitely all full loads when they go on.0

Think that was answered here...;)
LOL - nah they do have the common sense at least to make sure that it's full before it's switched on. Sometimes I do wonder, though, if they don't just put already washed clothes back in just because they can't be hassled to hang them up and put them away :eek:0 -
Hi Rodtheplod
Already some good advice on here. Thanks all. Thought I'd stop by with a bit more information that might help.Rodtheplod wrote: »Since October 2014 I've been on the E.ON Energy Fixed 1 Year v9 tariff where I've been paying £168 per month. My house is electric-only (no gas) and with four teenage kids my usage tends to be fairly high. We do have economy 7 and so take advantage of that.
Anyhow, I received an email from E.ON today advising me to choose my next tariff for October, else I'd be moved to the standard E.ON Energy plan which would take my monthly payment to £265 per month! almost £100 more
The best tariff that E.ON quoted me (on their online system) was the Energy Fixed 1 Year v16, which is still £240-odd per month so still a major hike for me.
Anyone know why there's such a hike in prices? is this general across the board or does it sound specific to me?
I guess I'll do some comparisons to see if I can move to another supplier, but I also wondered if E.ON would be bringing out any better deals/tariffs between now and October. Anyone know how often they bring out new tariffs? Is it worth calling them to see if they can offer another tariff?
Thanks for any advice!
We'll only put you on our standard prices when your current deal (Fixed 1 Year - version 9) ends if we don't hear from you. Version 9 ran from 25 September 14 until 2 October 14 so, depending on your start date, you've up until this date range this year to either change tariff or start to switch supplier.
We need to let customers on fixed deals know their agreement is coming to an end 49 calendar days before it actually finishes. After the end date, there's 20 working days where a Price Protection Window remains in place. If you switch supplier during this Window, we'll make sure you're protected against any price differences that aren't in your favour whilst the change goes through. Also, if you switch supplier after the renewal letter is sent but before the end of the contract, no exit fees will be charged.
All the tariffs currently available are on our website. This is the best place to look for new tariffs as the website is updated regularly.
Footguy's spot on too. We made a mistake with version 9 and the prices were artificially low. Not much comfort now, I know, but this has added to the sense of a larger than expected hike.Rodtheplod wrote: »Thanks for the reply!
Yup - i do keep an eye on my account through the E.ON app. Currently, it's showing a balance of £124 which my next direct debit should cover. So nothing unusual from that point of view...
If you think calling is a good idea, I'll do that. Do they have other tariffs that they don't publicly disclose, then?
As others have said, I'd expect more of a credit balance at this time of year ready for higher winter bills. It could be your payments haven't been covering the ongoing usage. If this is the case, the suggested amount will take into consideration any debit balance and spread this up to the annual payment review. This will inflate the figure quoted. Best to do as you suggest and pop the usage into a comparison site. This will show the options available both with us and with the other suppliers. I'd put your usage in as kWh rather than a money amount as this will give a more accurate picture.Rodtheplod wrote: »Yeah - as I said, I have four teenagers - three girls and one boy. They are always washing clothes after just one wear, etc. so the washing machine /dryer is always going even though I try to get the majority done during economy 7 hours - as with the dishwasher, too as that goes on the timer.
They were always leaving lights on, too which is why I changed them all to LEDs. Also my house is a 5 bed which I guess makes it that bit more expensive to heat/run, etc.
University is beckoning, though - so maybe I'll see some savings when they start moving out :T
Looks like you're already on the case with energy savings. There's lots of stuff on our website to help with this. When you've a minute, check out the 'Saving Energy' pages. Some good tips to help save money by saving energy.
Hope this is of interest Rodtheplod.

Carolyn500 wrote: »Hi Rob, I just wanted to say that I am in exactly the same situation as you, having been on the E.ON one year fixed v9 tariff since I moved into this house a year ago. Admittedly the amounts involved are a lot smaller than yours as I live alone in a two bedroom house. As there is no gas in this area I rely solely on electricity. I received an email yesterday telling me that E.ON intend to hike my bill by about £30 per month which, as a pensioner, came as a bit of a shock. I'm not sure whether to go with the One Year v16 option from October, but am concerned that I might get another large hike at the end of the next year if I do. I also have an 'Age UK' option which will cost roughly the same per month, but is fixed for two years which sounds attractive, but again, would probably mean a massive increase next time round. I am shopping around, but dread the thought of switching in case it leads to all sorts of billing errors. It certainly is a problem.
Hi Carolyn500
I've just posted a reply to Rodtheplod about our Fixed 1 Year version 9 tariff. I suspect much of what I've said might apply to your situation too. As above, I'd pop your usage in kWh into a comparison site to see the options available.
Our AgeUK tariff has age restrictions but, as a pensioner, you should be okay. There's also no exit fee with this tariff leaving you free to switch supplier at a later date without penalty if you change your mind.
May I ask, as you've only electricity, do you have a two rate Economy 7 meter? These tend to be found in many all electric properties. If you do, make sure you use as much electricity as needed during the off peak times at night when prices are cheaper. These times aren't at particularly sociable hours, I know, but timers might help a bit if you've high capacity appliances like a washing machine, tumble dryer etc.
Hope this and the post above are of interest.

Currently I'm on Eon 1 year fixed V14 having switched from EDF at the end of January 2015. Today I've received an email inviting me to choose a new tariff - V16. This represents a 30% increase, eg
V14 - day 12.988p night 5.092p
V16 - day 16.454p night 6.93p
Our house has electric CH via a GEC Nightstor boiler, so our usage is quite high (14000 kwh per annum) with 75% of that overnight. There's no gas where we live.
Can't understand why such a huge increase and looks like I'll be switching again.0 -

Just for a laugh I have run my modest energy consumption figures through the CEC comparison table and the latest E.oN offer comes up £260 more than the £655 by 2 single supplier contracts that I have just signed up to. If memory serves, this is what happened after last year's CEC Big Switch. Clearly, E.oN is not looking for any new customers at the moment. No doubt some existing E.oN customers will just sign up thinking that they are getting another good deal. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi rfsmith
Your current tariff, Fixed 1 Year (version 14), was a limited offer available from 28 November 14 until 13 January 15. Prices were discounted and held below standard prices for a year. These tariffs are starting to come to an end and renewal notices like the email you've received are going out to customers to let them know.
The email will tell you the options available. This includes our Fixed 1 Year (version 16) tariff which is also lower than standard prices although not by as much as version 14. I'd do as Hengus has and pop your usage in kWh on to the independent comparison sites. This will list many more options both with us and with the other suppliers.
Thought it might help to let you know a bit about the Price Protection window that kicks in when fixed term contracts like yours are nearing the end. The Price Protection window is open from the date on the renewal letter/email until 20 working days after the contract ends. Provided we're told, we'll make sure you're protected against any price changes that aren't in your favour whilst a change of supplier goes through. We'll work out which prices are cheapest, either the existing ones or the new prices, and charge these from the point the existing tariff ends until a switch is complete. Switching supplier usually takes about two and half weeks. Also, exit fees don't apply whilst the Price Protection window is open. If we don't hear from you, the account will automatically default to our standard plan once the fixed term contract ends.
With that amount of usage at night in an all electric property with storage heaters, I assume you've an Economy 7 meter and tariff?
Hope this is of interest rfsmith.

I do have Economy 7 due to the GEC Nightstor electric CH. My usage in 2014 was 4251 (day) and 11559 (night). Based on the prices at EDF, my then supplier, their 2015 fix would have cost £1342 compared to £1200 for EON V14. Hence I switched.
Using the same usage figure, the EON V16 will be £1561 compared to £1363 for EDF's next fix (till January 2017). A couple of other suppliers also come in at around the EDF quote.
Hence there's no case for staying with EON. I am annoyed that EON have replaced the current fix with a new one that is 30% more expensive when electricity prices have not been rising (eg little difference between EDF's 2015 and 2016 prices) and so I have to go through the process of switching again, probably back to EDF.0 -

Well I've now had another email from EON saying -
"To bring in the new year we're launching a new Fixed 1 Year Tariff on 12 January 2016, which will have lower prices than the renewal quote we recently sent you. This tariff will be available for a limited time only. "
Perhaps EON have taken notice of some feedback, or lots of customers are switching. I will wait to see what the new tariff is.0
