Lost account (-£1 in arrears): likely to still be active? Huge charges?

I've just remembered that I had a bank account with either Lloyds or Barclays when I was a teen, which was approximately -£1 in arrears. I stopped using that account completely approximately 8 years ago, when I got a student account with a different bank.

I've moved multiple times since I opened that account (plus my surname has since changed); any mail they may have been sending me I haven't received.

My questions are:

1) Is this bank account still likely to exist, or would the bank have closed it from inactivity?

2) If it DOES exist, is it likely to have built up a crazy amount of negative interest / charges? It was just a current account, so it had no overdraft facility.

3) Is it in my interest to be contacting Lloyds / Barclays to try and work out who my account was with, and what the damage is?

Check your credit 'rating' with Noddle (it's free) and that should, I think, give an outline list of all the accounts you have and whether they are considered good or bad.

both Lloyds and Barclays participate in the unclaimed assets scheme established under the Dormant Bank and Building Societies Act 2008.

If it was in a negative balance, they may have closed it to prevent further losses to them if you weren't using it. If it had a positive balance, under the scheme, they may transfer balances of dormant accounts to Reclaim Fund Limited but this is only after 15 years.

As advised, you would be best to look at your credit report on Noddle, it should state who the account is with on there too, although it will only give you the last 4 digits of the account number.

In answer to your 3 questions - 1) maybe 2)possibly not if there is a buffer facility on the account 3)Follow Zanderman's advice and check Noddle, it will give you information on the impact/damage it has had on your CR.
