That is a positive if your credit card is 0%. I was a mortgage arrears counsellor in the 90s and learned how to prioritise essential costs and mortgage, council tax and utilities and food come first so you could work out how much you will have coming in with your salary to cover all those and then look at reducing everything else to bare minimum until you have a clearer idea of your financial situation. I would start by doing that from now as I assume that on your salary the outgoings probably are reflecting that. A last resort is to restructure your mortgage over a longer repayment period to reduce payments if possible in the short term.

Thank you, much appreciated advice. I think I need to look at the bills accounts again, it's pointless me guesstimating some. I might have to do some searching, as some come out of the joint account, and some come out of OH's account. Will look at the bank statements when littlies are settled with a film.
Going to do a couple of hours extra work today too, which should all come in handy.

More questions keep popping up. The mortgage is in OHs name and is an offset mortgage, he has savings but a bigger OD they all sort of offset eachother. If OH wasn't earning a wage would the mortgage company get a bit shirty about the fact that the only money going in and out of the account would be the mortgage. Would they insist the OD was paid off etc? I know some accounts can be funny.

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
Read the sticky on the House Buying, Renting & Selling board.

  • OP, I read that you are ex-mil. Have you tried Forces Financial for advice and support? Apart from that, good luck. What is it your OH does?
