I feel sorry for the pensioners getting the blame for getting in people's way/taking up their time. I'm sure you could pick any group of people and find something about them that is irritating - small children, high school students, mums with prams, people dawdling down the street, whatever! Sometimes the annoyance might clearly be a selfish person, but other times it's just little things, so let it go!

Besides, it's not pensioners' fault they're not as fast as you, and in theory they probably don't have as much time as you... so be patient :)
I have 'picked' (or more accurately 'commented on') other groups of people.
    Let it go?
The original post in this thread was asking about
It did get me thinking though, how many adults do this to each other. Not just being late, but holding people up,
It's just a discussion sbout 'holding people up' and 'using people's time'.
Don't take it so personally. :)

So I assume that if pensioners had to pay to use the bus you would be happy with that. But it would not solve the problem you have with your buses being late because of the extra passengers. I find that by 9.30 am the buses are much quieter because most people have already gone to work that is why the pensioners are allowed to use them after 9.30
Did I say I would 'be happy' if pensioners had to pay to use the bus?
No, I didn't so your assumption is incorrect. :p

I was commenting on a suggestion by another poster that bus companies should put more buses on because they are rammed for a brief period after 09:30.
There would be a cost to this which would be borne by paying customers not pensioners who travel for free after 09:30.
Nothing at all about me being 'happy if pensioners had to pay', is there?

You may find your buses are less busy but in the 45 minute slot between 09:30 and 10:15 which covers the length of the first journey available free to pensioners from the start of the route to the end, the buses on my route are very busy.
And I'm commenting on my experience.
I'm not anti pensioner, but there is a core group of 'chancers' who routinely show up early in the hope that the bus driver/receptionist takes pity on them and lets them get in/on early.

I don't begrudge a pensioner using their bus pass on a bus at 09:30, that's what's it's there for, it's the usual suspects who routinely show up around 09:00 and, as every bus stops, they shuffle on, show their passes and are then told to get off again.

They are there for the 09:05, 09:12 and 09:22 buses before they're allowed on at 09:30.

    My point exactly! :T:T:T

My old running coach was awful for taking up my time. He'd sometimes call me. You could never have a 5 minute conversation with him. It was always 30 minutes minimum. But he'd moan if you were late for training or he needed to leave and you were talking.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've missed my train by one minute because I'm talking to a friend of mine. But I do like talking to him; so I don't see it as him taking up my time.

I think some people are reading a lot more into why people are late than there really is.

Some people just are. I doubt they stay up all night plotting and scheming the next day's manipulation of all in sundry.

But when it's constant , it does really get frsutrating. Even worse when I get moaned at for being two minutes late.

The same for routine hospital appointments, there are a hardened core, who will show up early (complaining about paying for the bus fares) as if it's a first come, first served 'thing' and are most put out to be told no their clinics aren't open yet, their appointments are later in the day and due to a variety of factors they can't have a cup of tea whist they're waiting.

There are a number of tests can't be performed because of tea, coffee or having something to eat and they walk away with a bee in their bonnets about having to come in again, they've come all this way, it's a disgrace, don't we know they're old etc...

It's beyond irritating to see these listed for reschedules when they could have had their appointments if they'd arrived at the right time and been seen to then.

All that would absolutely annoy me too and it must be very frustrating.

I get the impression that all the pensioners turning up early and causing havoc are older - in their late 70's or 80's, so it might be safe to say so here without contradiction. I have known some that are lovely and put others first and others that are a bit self-obsessed.

Not like us in our swinging sixties who are very well behaved some of whom are still holding down part time jobs.

I loved the post about cultural issues around time. When a young student nurse back ion the 60s, I was sitting in on GP appointments. The GP was Indian, and he said to one of the patients (also Indian) "now, these British people, they love their NHS and they think you very rude if you do not turn up 15 minutes early, so please don't make them cross with you!"

I know this woman who makes out she is my friend but she goes out socially with other people and I am never invited. I used to work with her and I am retired. Not that I am bothered. The thing is she is always asking for my help with job applications and forms because she is completely unable to do this kind of thing by herself. She rings me up and I go round to her house and do the whole thing for her.

The reason I help her is that she has had a very tough time with jobs and redundancies but now as it goes on its wearing very thin. The last time I was round there all evening and I wasn't even offered a cup of tea. She always promises bottles of wine etc but it never materialises. I am supposed to be going round next week to help with an application form but I am starting to resent my time being taken up. She has phoned me 4 times about this and not taken any hints. I think she thinks as I am retired I have nothing better to do but it is so deadly boring and long winded.

Those of you that don't like the cashier in the shop or teller at the bank talking to customers don't ever move to Canada, it's expected. First thing they ask is how you are. Also for anything monetary you have to make an appointment, it's like the UK 30 years ago. I've certainly learnt patience living here.

When I lived in England it used to annoy me that I could never get to the bank quickly at lunchtimes as it was cluttered with pensioners and women with kids, never understood why they had to go at lunchtimes when people who work only get half an hour or an hour. As for doctors I'm another one who had the first appointment of the day (I worked though so it's allowed lol!) and she was already running 20 minutes late! I never understood why when I wanted a non emergency appointment they couldn't book one and would tell me to ring as an emergency. What's that all about?
