    What's a tax IPA?
When you go BR the IS will contact Her Maj's Tax Bods and they will set your tax code so that you don't pay tax. The tax will appear in your pay cheque. You then keep this aside. DON'T SPEND IT WHATEVER YOU DO. You will then be contacted by the OR's agents and they will arrange for you to pay this to them.

Can I say that this is basic stuff and you should know this. Who ever was giving you advice really was not very well informed.

Tigerfeet, I'm beginning to think that myself! It was a lady at the CAB that deals with all of this. I've done a lot of googling myself but nowhere have I seen about the tax code.

I an under the Dr for Depression and Anxiety and we thought seeking professional help would be the right thing to do, but we have had to change so much on the firms because there were bits she just got completely wrong! Like putting DH earns £100 a month more than he does

I think you should pop your SOA up here and we'll all take a look. Also it isn't too late to contact Stepchange or National Debtline, both of whom are real experts in this. They will help explain what will happen next, what you need to do and how things will progress over the next year - or more if you have an IPA. There's lots to know about and your well-meaning CAB person might have forgotten other things too - and giving incorrect figures is going the right way to trouble, it will be found out anyway - you have to be totally, squeaky clean honest!!! I'm really shocked about that, hopefully it was a misunderstanding somewhere along the line.

The more proper knowledge you have the less you will worry.

...and ps, read your own sig message - it's great!

Thanks elljay. As soon as I get home I'll post the SoA up here. Thank you for your help, all of you. Wish I could take advice from my own song at the minute but despite seeking advice from a professional body and researching a whole load myself, I feel perhaps I'm not as well informed as I thought I was :(

Ahh bless, you soon will be, don't worry. We've all been there so can speak from personal experience, even if that experience varies sometimes. Everyone says it's the best thing that can happen, you will know where you are so you can budget (and maybe even save!), learn from what's happened and you will be set up for the rest of your life so you and your other half can move forward without all this worry!

Does £553.88 seem a lot for groceries and cleaning? It only equates out to £9.89 per day/each which is only £3.29 per meal but obviously a chunk of that goes to cleaning as well

  • I honestly believe you are going to have a hard time getting that groceries amount approved! It's very high for 2 people, do you have proof that's how much you spend and same with energy costs because they are high too for two people?

£100 for telephone and Broadband, do you work from home? You might be lucky and be allowed to have a basic Sky TV package but justifying £100 per month for those combined is going to be tricky I'd imagine.

Glasses and dental is very high, is there a specific reason it's that high?

What about money for your MOT? Car maintenance? Breakdown cover? Car parking?

£20 emergency fund, £10 per adult.

£40 holiday fund, £20 per adult.

You may have under estimated hair cuts, I'd move closer to £30 because it's not cheap for a lady to get her hair done :)
