Thank you to those who wished me well for this morning. It doesn't always come across well on screen, but it's a huge comfort to know people are thinking of you :heart2:
News......some bad and some good.....depending on how you look at things. I did go in there knowing I wasn't coming out with a batman sticker for a clean bill of health
Bad news....My diagnosis is Smouldering Multiple Myeloma.
I won't go into all the nitty gritty of it mostly because I don't fully understand in enough detail myself yet. But in short myeloma is a bone marrow cancer. It's a term I feel in my head I might have seen in the past on documents at work and paid no heed to what it actually was.
The good news is the smouldering part. I thought it might have just been added as a personal description of myself......but noIt means that although I have MM it hasn't progressed to a stage where it has damaged any of my major organs or caused significant bone damage. That's good news! My liver and kidneys are working fine, my calcium levels are good, I'm not anaemic and other than 2 very minor lesions on my spine, I have no significant bone damage.
So no heavy duty treatment needed at this stage. I (probably like most people) thought if you blasted any sort of cancer early, it would improve your chances. But apparently with this, there is no merit to having invasive treatments until the disease progresses.
It would seem that the smouldering thing is a bit of a piece of string scenario. No way of second guessing progression. My head isn't in the correct place yet for me to decide if that's good or bad.
So the plan now is for me to see a bone specialist with a view to starting me on some drugs that slow down bone deterioration. Other than that I will be 'actively monitored' which for the foreseeable (assuming the blood tests I had today are ok) means attending the cancer unit every 8 weeks and having blood tests and bone marrow tests if required _pale_
I'm also seeing someone next week to get more detailed information and advice on what to look out for myself.
I guess the only way I can see to be dealing with this is business as usual. I can't sit worrying for what could be months or years that every twinge is bad news. I feel fortunate that this was picked up early and being monitored so closely is re-assuring.
I'm young in terms of the age group that this disease generally affects and other than a few aches and pains I'm otherwise fit and healthy.
A big hug from me. You are one strong woman and a wonderful mother. All the best0 -

We have a shop in Maidstone called the golden boot, I don't know if they are a chain but we got rhino shoes from them last year in a 6 1/2, very wide and Velcro, I think they were £50 but have lasted since last September until this July.
Oooh thank you for this. I've googled it and they sell online. It's always good to know as many places as possible. Last year I think I even had trouble finding stock on Clarks online. I really don't mind paying for decent shoes for him but it nips a bit when his feet grow before they're even worn in
For the life of me I really cannot think why I bought those shoes in JanuaryI wouldn't buy him shoes unless he was with me and if I bought them then why didn't he wear them? And if he didn't wear them, he mustn't have needed them in the first place?
Another of life's great mysteries :rotfl:

WishI'dReadSooner wrote: »Asked hubby - Public hospitals tend to be in larger cities, It would be a State run hospital. eg. in New Orleans it's Charity Hospital which is run by the State of Louisiana. Things like the Baptist Hospital or other religions such as Lutheran, Methodist et. are normally private.
She should be aware that ambulances may not take patients to public hospitals depending on distance from accident/injury. Some ambulances are just contracted to private hospitals too.
State run hospitals, often University run can be good at getting problems sorted quickly but not so good on aftercare.
She really needs to do some research on the hospitals near where she is traveling to, in order to find out which hospitals she needs to go to to qualify for the insurance.
It's not something we've ever seen on our insurance documentation so possibly she didn't pick the best insurance. Hopefully she'll won't need it.
Thank you so much for the info WIRS I will pass it on to her. She has taken out insurance with Alpha Travel Insurance so it may be one for others to watch out for. She got it through Moneysupermarket was not actually the cheapest either but the excess and amounts covered seemed good.
I googled for reviews after she had booked. It definitely says public hospitals in the small print. It was one of the things that came up that someone's son had been taken to private hospital but was not in a position to be moved elsewhere. Going to be on tenderhooks now for the whole 2 weeks.
She is staying in Wainscott for first part of trip and then back to New York City for last part. Fingers crossed she doesn't need to claim, think probably over worrying because of what happened to her trampolining friend earlier this year.0 -
