Tofu Experiences?

Hi everyone!
I thought this might be a good place to ask? :A
I have got a pack of the Cauldron Tofu that needs using, I was thinking of marinading it and cutting it in slices and shallow frying it.
I do like Tofu but find it always seems a bit soggy / tasteless no matter what I marinade it in and usually tastes much nicer when you buy the ready marinated chunks.
I have got quite a lot of store cupboard herbs, spices, sauces etc.
Any tips & ideas Please? :T0 -
I know what you mean the marinated slices do seem taster.
Its also a lot cheaper to buy it from local chinese shops- you get about 3 times the same amount for about £1.50- £2.50.
You can use tofu to make scrambled eggs, burgers , lasagne ,stroganoff ,and cheesecake. Do you have a blender or food processor as you can make more things this way.0 -
Chuck it in the bin. Disgusting stuff.0

i blanch the tofu in hot water for about 3-5 minutes then slice it up. Sprinkle soya sauce, oyster sauce, spring onions, fried onions and eat with rice. If you're not vegan, you can shop up some century eggs and add that.
Popular recipes includes mapo tofu which is a hot and sour sauce with minced pork or pan fried lightly with a soya sauce/sesame oil combo.
If you prefer it to have more texture you should not be buying white tofu (as Chinese/Japanese prefer that to be more silky). If you go to a chinese supermarket, you will find many types of tofu in different textures.
some are pressed so that they are harder and some are semi-dried.0 -
To change tofu texture to a more spongy one (and this way it absorbs more sauce and is also better fried) you should freeze it, then defrost it and squeeze the water out. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

Thanks Penny and to everyone for your replies!
I couldn't see this thread earlier!I will have a read through now.
Unfortunately I don't think there is a chinese supermarket around here but I will try and find one for next time as it would be great to have a better choice of Tofu.
I will also try freezing it before I use it next time too.
Thanks again!0 -
After seeing all the wonderful recipes on here and everything I've tried from here being lovely, I am after a really good Tofu recipe, I've been told of its good properties but I haven't managed to find a way that I like so i was wondering if anyone had an amazing tofu recipe that I can try?
Thank you0 -

I'd like this too = I have some in the freezer (does it freeze?) - had one portion, not overly impressed but willing to give it another go!!:D0 -
Can't offer any great recipes but I can recommend the Cauldron 'marinated tofu'. Just stir fry with some onion (start with the onion and add tofu when it's softened/browned a bit) and finish with a decent Soy sauce, stuffed into a split pitta bread, or a wrap, with some salad - very tasty!
Quite a lot of recipe ideas on the Cauldron webpage:
