Frozen tofu can be crumbled and added to fried rice as an excellent substitute for egg. I make sure the excess moisture is squeezed out first, then add a bit of soy sauce and ginger then fry with the rice.
I haven't made this for ages and there's a tofu block sitting in the freezer. That's just sorted out a meal for next week!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Hi, Has anyone ever made Tofu?
My DD has started to use tofu and as it seems expensive to buy, we were wondering if anyone has ever made any from scratch? I have made some paneer cheese last year and it worked out ok, so was also wondering if it was made in the same way? Any ideas please. Thanks demented and DD.20p savers club

Now, I'm not vegetarian. I love a good steak now and then, and chicken etc.
However, I just can't get enough of tofu. It tastes of nothing, which makes it ideal to go with... well, anything really. So right now I have done the following:
Sautée a chopped garlic clove and a small finely chopped red onion in extra virgin olive oil, with a few rosemary needles.
When just golden, throw in half a glass of water and a teaspoon of Marmite, then mix.
Dice up half a pack of tofu (about 125g) and add to the pan, then cover and leave for 10 minutes. Add a bit of water just in case.
When ready, sprinkle on it freshly grated parmesan cheese, quantity to your taste.
Serve with potatoes and broccoli.

You can cook it every which way, in a hundred ways, or you can just eat it as it is in a salad - not much taste, but if you eat to live (not live to eat), then it's just as great.
Tofu is a boon for us women of all ages: it contains large amounts of natural oestrogens so it is particularly good for menopausal women too. On top of that, since it is made with the addition of certain calcium compounds, it is a great source of this mineral too - the portion above contains about 300mg, almost half the daily recommended intake. Not to mention the complete protein it provides. Cost of this tofu portion: 70p.
Ok, so most of you knew all these things already, but hey, I just had to enthuse. :j

Oh yes, you can use Bovril or anything you fancy. Sometimes I use tomato puree. Tofu is so tasteless that it can be used with anything. Just see it as a highly nutritious and healthy "filler" in any dish, chopping it as large or small as you wish.
The thing I would advise against is overcooking, as this destroys many of the B vitamins present in it. This is why I add it to the pot/pan about 10-15 minutes before cooking time is up.
You can also marinate tofu but I've never done this so I can't really say much about it.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Morrison's sells Cauldron tofu for 99p a box, and sometimes has them on BOGOF. Best price I've seen for tofu!

I know but I don't buy that one because the soya it's made from is not organic, so it's probably genetically modified. I buy only the Cauldron organic tofu at £1.39 in Tesco/Sainsbury. It may well be that both are equally good and healthy, but I feel more at ease with the organic variety.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Sounds YUM,
I like to scramble it in a fry pan add, onion powder, fried onions, garlic powder, celtic sea salt, a little soy sauce, tumeric, diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms and saute.
Yum on toast and if you add a little gur gum, it becomes like an omlette.0
