I have recently been deep-frying tofu in a little sesame oil, it gives a great flavour. Works best with tofu which has not previously been frozen as you then get a crisp outer shell with a creamy centre.

Another option is to mix tamari, brown rice vinegar and a little walnut oil and use this as the basis for a marinade. The flavour is unusual and I have known it result in "marmite" type love/hate debates. icon7.gif

I have got four packets of tofu in the freezer which I keep looking at but don't really know what to do with. Has anyone any tasty ideas please?

Hi jamjar, if you like Indonesian food, I could give you some recipes, eg tofu satay.

You can sautee some garlic or onion (or both if you like) and add some herbs such as rosemary. This is the base. Then you can add whatever cut up vegs you fancy or have left over, for instance, and let them cook adding some water. When ready, dice up the tofu and add to the pot, letting it cook for a few minutes onbly. Ideally it only needs to heat up, because if you leave it too long it becomes tough and tasteless.

I always have a few packs of tofu in the fridge, and when I'm in a hurry or can't be bothered to do major cooking, I sautee the garlic and add the diced tofu as above, but also make soup (from a packet) in a glass and add to the tofu. Usually chicken and leek, or asparagus, or vegetables. Let it simmer gently for a few minutes.

    Hearty and different...:)

  • Make a basic pasta sauce, mush up the tofu with a fork and stir through the sauce to heat through.

Cut into strips, coat in spices and a bit of sugar (or a crumbled Chinese Oxo ;) ) and stir fry with veggies.

For silken tofu whizz up with some crushed garlic and salt and pepper for a creamy garlic dip. Best not consumed in company ;)

I cut the blocks of Cauldron tofu (often on BOGOF in Morrisons) into four before freezing them - just right for one person and much easier than trying to cut up a frozen block!

Last night while putting shopping in the fridge, I found at the back of it a pack if Cauldron organic tofu with the Use By date of 21 Jan!

Since the stuff looked ok, I cooked it in a nice vegetable stew taking the risk of tummy upset and whatnot, since today I was off and at home all day so I could weather the effects. In the event, the tofu turned out to be perfectly ok.

I decided to post this in case any of you worries about out of date tofu, although of course it's always best not to risk any out of date stuff with children.

    :)

  • Hello all,

Can I just check with someone who knows how to use tofu whether I can stir fry it? I saw some in the reduced section - it is marinated tofu (Cauldron brand) and it says to put in oven for 3-5 minutes. Can't I just stir fry it with my veg, and if so for how long? Is it raw? or is there no such thing as raw tofu?

    Thanks in advance
