I had that happen to me some years back, but it was from someone I knew, and was a *ahem* saucy text to a person whose name began with the letter before mine in the alphabet - I figure he thought he'd pressed on her number, but instead had scrolled forward to mine.

I simply deleted it. He'd have been mortified to think I'd seen what he wanted to say to this lady.

I wrote a text to my wife as she was about to finish working a late shift, telling her that the kettle was on, and also, with a suggestion for some "evening fun" when she got in.

Unfortunately, I sent it to the last person contacted in my phone's history, which happened to be my niece, whose house I had been working on earlier that day.

We had a good laugh about it. Just one of those things that goes wrong sometimes.

As for the OP's question, I'd have sent a message back to say "wrong number". Simple.

    I've been Money Tipped!
For complicated reasons I do type numbers in rather than use contacts lists sometimes.

And yes, it has lead to mistakes.

Not every one is a spammer, but otoh, i would not expect anyone to correct my mistake.

I've sent messages to the wrong person before when a friend has had a new number and I've stored it incorrectly. :-)

A text like that or generally one not for me I would ignore unless it was obviously important. However my partner got a text by mistake recently which was meant for someone who had recently lost their father and the message was one of support so he obviously let the person know their error so they could contact the correct person.

I remember getting a voicemail on my landline from the Police. It was regarding a case of violent assault, firstly naming the recipient (victim) the accused, a witness statement and the date of the trial.

I did return the call, imagine that getting into the wrong hands. The officer (DC) was mortified and apologised, such a data breach could (possibly should) have cost him his job.

That is very unprofessional. No way should that policeman have left that voicemail. Anyone could have gotten hold of it. He should have just left a message saying, 'this is police officer wotsizname, please can you call me at your earliest convenience on 555-555-5555.'

    Terrible.

Re the OP: personally, I would not message/text back unless the same person/number kept messaging me.

In the pre-iPhone days we used to buy a cheap PAYG phone for use in the USA.

I had a text asking me if I had 'a quarter or an eighth?' Of course, innocent little me didn't have a clue and I didn't want to waste my credit replying. I had a few more on the same lines, until one day, 'do you know where the body is buried?'

I went back to the phone shop, spoke to the manager and suggested that someone is trying to spook this little Welsh lady.

We did consider going to the police, but selfishly, I suppose, were afraid we'd get tied up in a court case and not be allowed to leave,

In my rage I sent a text to hubbys best friend (with the same name as hubby) telling him exactly what i thought of him... Except it was meant for hubby. Unfortunately its not the first time ive done this and hubbys best friend texted me back and said......

"I guess you two are in the middle of domestic".

He knows me so well. :rotfl: He is now in my phonebook under his surname.

Many years ago, I received a text, from an unknown (to me) number, along the lines of "It was lovely to meet you last night, I had a really good time, do you fancy catching up next weekend?"

Not wanting to stand in the way of true love, I sent a reply saying "Sorry, you've got the wrong number".

I then got a reply back saying "Oh well, never mind. You sound nice, do you fancy meeting up?"

I, very stupidly, replied back saying "I'm a middle-aged married woman, with kids, but thanks anyway!"

I then got a stream of replies, all of which contained very rude suggestions :eek: This went on for over a week, I couldn't block numbers on my very basic Nokia, I ended up having to get a new SIM just to stop them.

I've learned my lesson, I NEVER reply to unsolicited texts now!

When anyone gives me a new number to store on my phone, I immediately ring it, while they are still with me, to ensure I've stored it correctly.
