The moment you text back, they will then know your mobile number is a real/in use one, and you'll find your yourself being inundated with unsolicited texts I'm afraid.
I agree with this.
I would not answer it.
I have received random texts from numbers I don't recognise to someone I have never heard of, and also the occasion voicemail, and I have never responded.
Every single time, without exception, I have not received a second text (or voicemail) from the same number. So in many cases it either was an utter coincidence - like maybe someone got the wrong number: (although this is hard really - especially if it's a text - as numbers are usually programmed into people's phones,) or it was spam. I always think this is a bit funny that they never text or phone again.
I would not respond at all, unless I started getting them very regularly. Then I would just text and say 'you are texting the wrong number, please check the number you should be contacting..' This all seems a bit odd though, as it sounds like the guy the OP is talking about knows the person he is texting, so why would the number not be programmed into his mobile phone?
Sounds a bit suspicious.0 -
I have had a wrong text from someone talking about seeing them at work the next day. I did reply to tell them it was the wrong number and they texted back to thank me. I don't even have 'free' texts as I am PAYG.
I have done the same when I have had an answer phone message obvioulsy not for me. In one case it was from someone about an alarm and they called me back very grateful.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I had that happen to me some years back, but it was from someone I knew, and was a *ahem* saucy text to a person whose name began with the letter before mine in the alphabet - I figure he thought he'd pressed on her number, but instead had scrolled forward to mine.
I simply deleted it. He'd have been mortified to think I'd seen what he wanted to say to this lady.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I once texted a friend using the number I had stored in my phone. I got a reply from a very confused and somewhat upset stranger who wanted to know who I was and how I had her number for her brand new phone she'd only just got.
Long story short, basically phone companies reuse numbers that haven't been in use for a certain amount of time. My phone had somehow sent the message to my pal's previous number, that she'd had over a year ago, and it had obviously just been assigned to this person's new phone.0 -
I would ignore the text and block the number, as I do with any message I receive from somebody I don't recognise. If it's a spammer then I don't want to encourage them. If it's a one-off mistake then it hardly matters.0

I constantly get texts from a doctors surgery as a client has given the wrong mobile number, its all right though the surgery name is in the text, but as I'm not the client I can't remove the number and the surgery are too lazy to contact them!0

I remember getting a voicemail on my landline from the Police. It was regarding a case of violent assault, firstly naming the recipient (victim) the accused, a witness statement and the date of the trial.
I did return the call, imagine that getting into the wrong hands. The officer (DC) was mortified and apologised, such a data breach could (possibly should) have cost him his job.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
