  • OP,
As a seasoned EBay user, I know that the following is true:
If you REALLY want an item:
Stick on a 'test' bid - just above the current price.
Ensure your settings give you a reminder 5 mins before end.
Watch the final minute. Put on your max bid, but DO NOT actually place the bid until the last 6 seconds.
This ensures that nobody has a chance to counter it after a rethink.
Therefore, you pay the lowest price possible.

I always watch the users bidding up in 50p increments, and I sigh. They never win.
    Don't show your hand.

I bid on things I really want. If there is a total bargain that I fancy, maybe I punt at the start price, and just forget it. If someone outbids me, so be it.
If you REALLY want it, follow my advice.

I have other tricks. Excellent ones. But they are a secret!!! :-)
  • And I have a full-time job, 5 children and claim NO benefits. Just to be clear!
I can't afford many of the things I own. I own them because I have eBay skills. True story.

It could be one of several reasons why the caravan was not visited by the winning bidder. The winning bidder could have been several 100 miles away or maybe in another country. Also, it could have been bought by a dealer who knew this type of caravan and was willing to take the risk of not seeing it if the price was right.

With regard to bidding, you should have bid close to the maximum that you were willing to pay instead of just a few pounds above the starting price. Remember the starting price is only increased by a set increment when you bid and not to full amount of your bid unless your bid happened to be one increment above the starting price. You need to there bidding in the final seconds and not just the final hour. Sniping is a service offered by firms who do so for a fee and is legal. It is unlikely that a sniping service was used here though.

I've seen someone leave a bid of say £50 on an item knowing the auctioneer will bid from the book for them. Items goes in the room for £55 and original bidder then turns up shouting and hollering that it isn't fair as he left a bid and would have gone higher if they had realised it would go for more. Same rules apply though, the highest bid on the table is the one that wins.
Amazing how many people do that. I remember telling someone who left me a bid that someone had already left a higher one, they later told me I should have increased their bid. Auctioneers need mind reading skills. You even get people coming up to you after the auction telling you they would have paid more and they stood watching others bid.

There's nowt so queer as folk.
