Spent around £22 on stuff to make a roast for my grandparents, who are visiting tomorrow. However, they usually pay when we go out for dinner and suggested this time if I cooked they'd pay for the ingredients. I don't want to look crass and remind them, so I'll wait and see if they offer again tomorrow. Kind of hope they do as otherwise it's blown the budget.

To be fair £22 for a two course meal to feed five isn't bad and they would normally spend £100+ on dinner for us all. I'm planning on serving doing mustardy pork, potatoes and veg in the slow cooker (as we'll be out some of the day) and then rhubarb crumble using the last of the rhubarb in the garden. Only had to buy a pork joint, veg, butter and ice cream which is why it was so reasonable. Will pick up wine tomorrow but don't count alcohol in the budget and again they may pay.

Have only used the slow cooker once (just got it on Tuesday for my birthday!) so a bit nervous about doing the pork in it but I was struggling to see what I could make that they'd like otherwise because of us going out (they're kore plain eaters and my papa hates onions which is very restricting!). Any advice welcome.

Suggest you have a quick look at

Loads of recipes on there and you could maybe 'tweak' one to suit. It gives you the timings etc. It's usually advised to heat it all up before putting in slow cooker and don't forget to put it on LOW before going out. HTH

Welcome karenccs67, you're very welcome to follow now and start properly in September.

Some shopping in L*dl, Ic*land and Mr T yesterday and the day before, so my spends for this month are now £277.70/£400.

I'm getting a Morries order on Sunday (tomorrow) as usual, then one next week to qualify for the £15 voucher. (The voucher will be counted as 'income' on my spreadsheet.) After that I'll start stretching my shopping week (keep moving the food order back by one day, as long as we can scrape meals together from freezer and cupboard stores) to save money.

Next month my 'children', and the various visitors they bring with them, will be back at university in another city, so our food bills will hopefully drop a lot until the Christmas holidays arrive. :)

    Morning all,
i managed to reduce my online sainsburys shop to £54.90 instead of the original £100 budget set for payday big shop!

I decided to try some of the basic brands items such as pasta, biscuits, bacon etc.
Very disapointed not one of the freebi codes work though:(

I will be bringing it close to £60 over the weekend when i go to buy my toilet roll from h**e B***a**s and my 50p W***ko's own brand anti bac wipes.

i also very pleased im making a good way into my christmas shopping, have been very frugal with clearance toys etc :D

have a grest weekend everyone x

It does depend on the supermarket and if/when it closes but I find it's usually between about 7 and 8:30. Early last week I happened to be there around 8 and caught them putting all the reduced stuff out and got some bargains. Few days later we had to pop in and it was about 7:30 and all the reduced stuff had been and gone.

The checkout lady said that 3pm on a sunday is the best time to get bargains but that there's so many people there it can get a bit hectic so I'll be giving that a miss I think
  • I did my weekly shop yesterday and spent £59.03 I am hoping this will last me now till the end of the month. I might need a loaf of bread and some milk possibly next weekend. I am currently under my target of £300 for the month :) Pretty pleased as the OH was off for 2 weeks and did 3 shops with me which is never good!!
