For that matter I'm pretty sure even a 1997 BMW 328i drives a lot better than a 2015 Corsa! Which begs the question, why spend £14,00 or whatever on a brand new tin eco-box Vauxhall? This is a money saving site after all so surely it makes sense to buy a used car (not a Vauxhall) for less than half the price of a brand new Vauxhall.

    As I said, I would not buy a Vauxhall.....neither would I buy a BMW.

You on the other hand seem to be obsessed with BMW .

I was using BMW and Mercedes as an example. And it's still true IMO, I'm sure even you would agree that an older generation BMW still drivers a lot better than the latest generation Vauxhalls. Brands like Honda or Nissan have more of an enthusiast following than Vauxhall- showing that when they want, they're capable of developing legendary cars that excel in performance and handling dynamics.

Depends what you define "drives a lot better".

Fuel economy, technology etc are far better in new cars than any early 2000's car.

As in driving, handling, composure at higher speeds, steering and so on. The only thing the latest generation of Vauxhalls is better at than say a '97 328i M-tech is fuel efficiency.

But in "your" opinion someone would only buy a Vauxhall as A-B transport so with that in mind, why would they buy an 18 year old BMW which would be far less reliable than a brand new vehicle.
I am assuming from your comments, as you seem to know everything about them, that they will not want to be doing DIY repairs.

Newer should be more reliable but that isn't always the case. How many older BMW's 15 year plus do you see on the road? Quite a lot. I hardly ever see any older late 90's Vauxhalls on the road now days. Newer cars can be more problematic, newer Vauxhalls are prone to electronic parking brake and gearbox issues. Older 6 cylinder petrol BMWs have a reputation of being bullet proof, as do their gearboxes.

Another misunderstood notion that's prevalent in this forum is that NEWER= BETTER & RELIABLE. As I said before this isn't always the case. Posters always snub at cars that are even 5 years old as if the age of the car is the be all and end all and we shouldn't bother spending money on them because of its age.

I'd rather drive a nice, plush 10 year old premium car with a strong engine and comforts (with a good service history) than a brand new eco-box., but each to their own...

I'm always amazed at the numbers of people on here (a money savign site) who seem to think buying new cars on finance is a good idea.

Very true. And its the same people who usually bellow on about the age of the car as if its the omnipotent deciding factor. "Oh my 4 year old car needs a new clutch- time to buy a brand new car!"

Its the wrong mentality to have, especially when you want to save money!
