Older 6 cylinder petrol BMWs have a reputation of being bullet proof, as do their gearboxes.

I've driven 2 and loved them. The ENGINES are bulletproof but the cars are not.
E46 3 Series - the subframe can fall off!
    Rusty front arches

    Just 2 examples there.

How is a new Corsa better than a 15-20 year old BMW?
Seats, pedals, wheel won't be worn
Don't have to worry about service parts condition
    More practical hatchback shape
    Lower insurance, tax, fuel costs
    Better equipped
Easier to get in and out of
5* Euro NCAP safety - FAR safer than a 3er of that age

You'll not catch me in a Corsa, and if I wanted a supermini I'd buy a Fiesta or something instead, I just don't see the point in comparing it to a Merc or BMW - they're completely different cars.
And don't slag off people who buy new cars for whatever reason - they're the reason used cars are so cheap! Shhhh!!

I hardly ever see any older late 90's Vauxhalls on the road now days.

I can see four from where I'm sitting right now, looking out of the window over three factory car parks.

There's a 96/97 P plate Corsa in that horrible purply blue colour, a 99 Vectra in silver, a 2000 W Astra hatch in black, and another bubble shape Corsa whose VRN I can't read from here.

Out of probably 60 cars I can see, that's quite a large proportion. Perhaps you're looking in the wrong place?

Oh, and in case you're wondering, I can see two 90s Beemers. A rather lovely Technoviolet 318ti with the M-sport kit, and a properly ratty E39 525d with a primer black bonnet and NSF wing.

Speaking from first hand experience, I have driven several Vauxhalls through my work when I get hire cars. I've driven a 2012 Corsa, 2013 Astra auto both petrol and diesel, Insignia, Meriva and Mokka. All of them I hated, except the Insignia which was pretty decent. I don't know what it is about Vauxhalls but compared to most other cars in its class they just fall short in too many areas.
