Might be a good idea to get your company to remind staff of the speed limit for vans. I do feel your pain though because van speed limits are not very well publicised.

Unfortunately, ignorance of the law is no defence. It's your responsibility to know any specific restrictions that apply to the vehicle you're driving.

If it is a non car-derived van or a van with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 2 tonnes the limit is 50, where the limit for a car would otherwise be 60. Many van drivers are not aware of this, but ignorance is no excuse.

BTW the limit is 60 for dual carriageways and 70 for motorways.

    Where'd you get this non-sense?

The national speed limit is 70 on any road where the opposing lanes are physically separated. EVEN if there's only one lane in each direction.

Boils my blood when the idiot in front slams on the brakes to pass a speed camera in a 70 limit...... Unless they're in lane one, in which case I just laugh as I plough on through at 70 (76 on my speedo).

OP has been had by a jobsworth in a scamera van, they have targets to meet and I bet they make a lot of money this way from van drivers.

I'm fully aware of that, but I still feel the OP's pain.

Perhaps the companies that hire these vans should do more to make people aware.

I suspect he means that the dual carriageway limit is 60 (or 50) for goods vehicles, as in the link provided by marlot. Of course, because we still have no idea what van the OP actually drives we are all guessing what limits apply.

That was my interpretation as well - a typical 3.5 ton van is limited to 70 on a motorway and 60 on a dual carriageway. And 50 on a single carriageway, ( whereas cars can do 60 ). As you say, the OP hasn't clarified what the van was, but given that he's been done for doing 60 I'm assuming it's a 3.5 ton van

The lower speed limits apply to all goods vehicles, except car derived vans with a maximum laden weight not exceeding 2 tonnes.

And post like this demonstrate why van drivers get into trouble over dual carriageway speed limits. This thread is specifically about driving vans on the road.

I know loads of professionals in the motor industry who are unaware of the limits on vans.

If you drive from Birmingham to Nottingham, when you change from the M42 to the A42 there is little difference in the road quality, but you now have to drive at 60mph if you are in a van, a car driver need make no adjustment. So if you are WVM tanking it down at 95 in your Sprinter, you change from being 25mph over the limit to 35mph over the limit, the change to an A road has just given you a court appearance.

As of May this year, both vans and lorries are limited to 50mph on single carriageway roads as lorries have had their speed upped.
