Blondbubbles - could you be a star and work mine out for me?

Single parent, one child who will be at school by next April, so childcare spread over the year is likely to be roughly £10 a week.

I work 21 hours and earn £9300 before tax.

    Thank you

Mostly this has been an enlightening thread, thanks to the links and info provided by a few people in the know I am wondering if I have calculated this correctly.

A single parent working 16 hours with one child and 2 days child care costs currently has no taper applied. Come April 2016 when the NMW is £7.20 the same parent would receive approx £1027 / £20 week less?

I know if they are in rented accommodation some of this could be mitigated by housing benefit, yet that is another area which the government are targeting.

Thanks sorry I edited mine as I realised NMW was £7.20 not £7.40 but my calculations were in the right direction. In this instance the person would break pretty even.

Often a single parent is stuck in their 16 hour contract as it is child friendly and any request to increase their hours is a change in contract which can result in a change of shifts eg; 12 hour shifts in a care home or a changing shift pattern in retail. A nursery or even a flexible childminder would be unable to cover this work pattern. I know it's not just single parents it was merely the example I used.

Blonde bubbles can you tell me what a single parent earning nmw working 30 hours with two school age children would get? One child gets middle rate care component dla.

    Thanks

Blondebubbles, now that tax credits are being cut, do you think child benefit will be the next to go? I'll be using it to pay my childcare until I can get a new job that gives me 16 hours rather than 12. If they take that away then I am doomed lol!
