You are definitely not pregnant on the 1st day of a period. That was 24/6.
You most likely ovulated about 14 to 16 days later - that would be 8th/10th July. (It could even as been as late as the 12th)
Conception could be the following day 9th/11th (or 13th) July.
Unless you used a very high sensitivity test (which is the version with lower accuracy) that has a 7 to 10 day minimum period after conception to detect a pregnancy, on or around 20th to 24th July, then the test would almost certainly be negative.
If the dates of 9th - 13th are true, you could be just over 4 weeks gone.

Unless things have changed consideably since I had my last one 6 and a bit years ago, the gestation period is calculated from the first day of the last period, or 14 days before ovulation if the date of the last period is for some reason not a good predictor. Whilst quoia is correct to say that you clearly hadn't conceived on the first day of your last period, nonetheless that would be the usual date used for calculating your due date and your stage of gestation for the purposes of doing any tests during the pregnancy.

As others have said, given that things are a bit uncertain, you are likely to be offered an early dating scan, which are accurate to within about 5 days (again unless they have improved since my day). As the "window" for normal birth is about 4 weeks however (ie anything between 38 and 42 weeks is considered within the normal range) a few days here or there on the dating scan won't make much difference.

Good luck with the pregnancy. As others have suggested, if you are not comfortable with your GP maybe consider a change before the pregnancy progresses too much further (even to another within the same practice)
  • Congrat's - don't worry our GP, midwife and even on a private scan all differed in their dates - two weeks between them. I wouldn't worry - your baby will come when it's ready - not when the doctor says its ready. Nature is a wonderful thing!

If I had a history of gynae and other medical problems I would argue that dating by the calendar isn't likely to work, because any number of factors could have interfered with the date of ovulation and conception. My advice to the OP is to stress that the date is dubious and ask the midwife for an early scan to double check.

    Hello and congratulations,

Here a positive twist to your doctor being wrong, you are about to recieve a medical card based on the date your doctor calculated that will give you free dental and prescriptions that will last until 1 year to the day from the predicted due date. So if the doctors wrong, your free care will last 3 weeks longer.

As for calculating how far gone you are, go with what you know and the scan. Periods aren't even that helpful as I managed to have 2 periods at the beginning of my pregnancy along with a few negitive results. Doctor told me the test can be wrong when they are negative but almost 100% right when positive. I was so confused at the time I found I was pregnant I did 5 tests, cos I just didn't believe it, partly as I hadn't come off the pill and as I said I'd had periods til that point.

I also remember feel quite left to my own devises by the midwife for the first 6 months or so, so can I suggest you go and invest in a good pregnancy book that gives you the whats happening break down week by week or "pregnancy and birth" magazine do a basic one. If you know what is happening with your body and when things should be happening (i.e scans at 12 and 20 weeks), it helps you feel a bit more in control of it all (well it did me).

    hope it helps

As other posters have said baby will arrive when ready. One thing I noticed with all three of mine is that I would start to feel unwell at around 5-6 weeks (tired, heightened sense of smell, nausea). The first baby wasnt confimed till I was 8 weeks but I had a couple of weeks before the test of 1)not realising and 2)in denial!

I had skipped a period with my last. I could have been up to 10-11 weeks gone but I was only 5 1/2 weeks, not even advanced enough to confirm a viable pregnacy.

I would be surprised if you noticed symptoms at 4 weeks but every pregnacy is unique so enjoy.

    Hi,

    Firstly Congratulations.

Secondly - take this response as a positive one - if they put you 3 weeks behind where you actually are then there is less likelihood that they'll pressure you into any interventions at your later stages, you'll be less likely to have family and friends ringing you to see if anything's happened yet letting you enjoy the time up to your baby coming without any pressure.

There is a likelihood though that they are more likely to settle your dates at your scan (though a scan is only as good as the person interpreting it!)

Don't worry about it - just enjoy being pregnant.

Pregnancy is dated from the first day of the LMP.

    Congratulations!!

I would suggest go with your gut feeling and tell your midwife what you think your dates are and don't worry about it.

In 2006 my LMP before getting pregnant was 26 June and I had 23 day cycle, so I calculated my due date to be 25 March 2007...but my GP was insistent it was 2 April....only a few days in it...but with my previous pregnancy history those few days were important...
I mentioned to my m/w that they should not base calculations on a regular 28 day cycle and fortunately she listened to ME and documented my due date as 25 March...and my DD was born 23 March weighing 10lb 1, so thank goodness it WASN'T into April LOL

Oh and the dating scan agreed with my calculations too....in most cases...MUM TO BE just KNOWS!!! :rotfl:
  • Sameas everyone else said really, they come when they want.

I had my son on the 21st March, my date of last period was the 21st June. I know exactly what date he was concieved (2/3rd August only night we weren't as careful as usual) I was abroad when I fell pregnant so didnt get a MW visit/scan until I was 16weeks pregant, they then put me forward to the 21st (I was due on the 27/28th-had a bit of stress during my pregnancy and my grandad screamed at me to the point i was hysterical and my waters went)otherwise i would have probably been closer to MY date (27th)

Good luck anyway and go with your instincts,
